Ken-

Any old railroad buildings in Ogdensburg would be NYS&W, not L&HR.

The line from Franklin to Ogdensburg was only taken over by the L&HR (solely to service the zinc mine) in the early 60's, after the abandonment of the Hanford branch by the Susquehanna.

The caboose across South Street from the station in Warwick is only lettered for L&HR. It was originally NYS&W 0119, bought by a local Chamber of Commerce member in the seventies and moved to Warwick. (I can vouch for the accuracy of this information because I'm the one who suggested the let...

L&HR Power

Somehow, I missed this thread til now- sorry, guys. Last question first: C-420's 25 and 26 were sold to the British Columbia Railway in July 1972. You probably caught the 26 in transit, on its way to the Pacific northwest. As far as power going beyond Maybrook, I don't think it ever happened. I seem...

I checked my neg logs; this one is listed as Greycourt. (No date listed, but given the crew posing alongside the engine and train, and the as-built configuration, I'd say the engine was fairly new; built in 1882, that would put the photo in either '82 or '83.) Patrick- contact me off-list (my email ...

Patrick- Thanks for the 'memory jog'- been meaning to get this out to you for a while. I've finally started digitizing some of my copy negative archives, and found this one. Date and location unknown, but it is the 17 as the 17, complete with big square oil headlight and posing crew. The passenger c...

Almost the same time frame, but my father had been buying Railroad (under a few names over the years) since the early thirties. He saved a lot of things from back then, including most of these magazines- and had them on an attic shelf, in order (several small gaps through the thirties, and his mothe...

For a small glimpse into the history of the Federal, I invite you to take a look at this section of my website:

Fair warning- the timetable images are LARGE; they'll take a while to download on a dial-up connection.

MANY miles behind the wheel of a GM PDM4507 coach (on Short Line they were called deck-and-half's). Much better ride, better driving 'feel' than the MC-9's that replaced 'em- IMHO. (Guess I'm dating myself a little here- it was back in the early eighties, and even the MC-9's are going away...) I hav...

Can't say for sure about the C&A in New Jersey (it sounds right), but the D&H's Stourbridge Lion was first used (tested) in August 1829, several months before the B&O's Peter Cooper-built Tom Thumb, and more than two years before the C&A's John Bull. Granted, the Lion was never used ...

I've had a couple pair of the E. P. Alexander link & pin couplers in my parts box for years. Here's a couple of shots of one mounted under an unfinished O&W boxcar: http://lhr.railfan.net/images/LincolnPin1.JPG http://lhr.railfan.net/images/LoncolnPin2.JPG It is fully functional, but a bit o...

Erratta, addenda, and additions... (I cheated a little here- dug out the local papers from that week for some details; plugging holes in a 44 year old memory, so to speak.) As I said, this excurson and celebration had been in the works for several months. Originally, the plan was to limit sales to 1...

http://lhr.railfan.net/images/2124excwar.jpg Don, I remember it like it was yesterday, and you are substantially correct. It was June 4, 1960, first departure I believe was at 1:00 PM. I rode the second section with my family (the diesels were #3 and #10, specially repainted for the celebration- th...

I, too, can verify them back to late 40's, early 50's- but they go back much further. About 1911, the L&HR built a new 7 stall repair shop in Warwick. Blueprints I have call for roll-up doors ("rolling steel doors"), and photographs of the then new building show these doors; they and t...

Back in the seventies, Scalecoat had a wash-away paint remover, re-usable. It appears to be still available. I've used it, and it was much kinder to the plastic than brake fluid- nasty stuff!
