Re: Haverhill Line Upgrades (Western Route)

The first scheme I heard, 10+ years ago, was Andover's DPW would move to a new site. Then the MBTA could use the old DPW site, on the east side of the tracks more or less across from the current west-track-only Andover station for a new station with parking and a new platform on the easterly track. ...

The above-ground trolley shed that was Massachusetts Station still opened onto Newbury St. in the 1970s. It was fenced off and the MBTA appeared to park work trucks there. Everything beyond the south edge of the trolley "tunnel" box had been demolished when the Mass. Turnpike was built.

Re: Brightline Orlando Launch Discussion

I had been tempted by the NRHS convention - ride Brightline, see a couple of museums, ride behind steam, but gave it a pass because of other commitments. Not sure when I'll next have any reason to be in FL.

Re: Amtrak agrees to add passenger rail stop in De Soto

That would be De Soto, MO, per the Post Dispatch.

One nice feature of RDCs with stops or slow orders relatively close together was their acceleration and braking. I don't know if these can still do it, but with their original 6-110s B&M RDCs would reach at least 50 MPH in the 1.2 miles between Lynn and Swampscott. And yes, I've seen 75 MPH on t...

The limo riders don't need the T to be fast, convenient or even safe. They only need it to keep its nostrils above the water till after the next election.

AFAICT stories of improvements arising from BR privatization in the UK are all myths of the Tories. Under BR there was a unified ticket system serving all points. After privatization I've encountered major obstacles, incorrect pricing, ignorance of rules etc. when buying multiple-operator tickets. R...

Re: AMTRAK NEC: Springfield Shuttle/Regional/Valley Flyer/Inland Routing

The Boston & Albany line from Worcester to Springfield was all double track into the Conrail era. Before dieselization, there were a couple of 4-track segments on the most troublesome grades. IIRC one was west of Worcester, the other east of Palmer but I'd need to dig in my library to be sure.

All the track necessary exists for NYP - New Haven - Springfield - Worcester - Ayer - North Station (or NYP - New London - Worcester-Portland and NYP - Providence - Worcester-Portland as the East Wind and State of Maine used to go). Until recently, passengers couldn't have used Worcester - Ayer beca...

Once the French knew the horsepower the TGV needed to accelerate to top speed fast enough for good trip times, the whole issue of new lines changed substantially. The steepest grade I find on a TGV line is LGV Sud-Est 1:28 (3.6%). I don't know how this will work out with diesel power, but I'll guess...

You'll also need parts, particularly electronic boards and subassemblies, with accurate documentation. I've been told that Seashore's Boeing LRV only has "as delivered" documentation.

Contractor Maine Track Maintenance worked on the South Boston II carbarn this week. Building the track inside went smoothly. The outside work was slower. They were able to move all the big pieces of rail we'd stored back to the site. They assembled the easterly track and its turnout. The first restr...

The key word is "portions". New double track south of Quincy will work much like driving to Boston from the North Shore - barrel along a limited access highway, get dumped onto 5 miles of strip development and chronic congestion.

Danib62: A year too late, info from many years ago: The bus ran from Transbay Terminal to the Oakland station. Used long-haul buses with luggage compartments below the seats. Quite straightforward, subject to Bay Bridge traffic but we didn't experience any delay. Don't know how it might have changed...
