Here's a quote from the video description from the national weather service about the tornado hitting the train: "THE TORNADO THEN MOVED ACROSS THE CHICAGO AND NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD WHERE IT BLEW 12 RAILROAD FREIGHT CARS OFF THE TRACK. THE TRAIN WAS MOVING AT THE TIME THE TORNADO HIT IT...SO A...

Thanks for the info jc. I haven't been over there in a few years and i didnt realize they built that condo/office building which appears to be sitting on the old railroad easment blocking any rebuilding of the line into the industrial park(as you mentioned). I guess its just another piece of boston...

I'm no expert on this, but I also had the feeling that the engine had gone into emergency so therefore the consist slammed into the rear. We have to remember too that this derailment actually happened on a long bridge. I think the train probably would have survived intact if it didn't cross the brid...

This tagging of objects reminds me of my old male cat. He used to "tag" every new thing we brought into the house. I agree it's time that the big retail outlets stop selling spray pain, or restrict it to people with an ID number. This would put second thoughts on the selling party as well ...

Great info mustang, thanks for sharing! Do you remember if the line crossed kendrick st. in needham and who was the customer over there? I read the article too. It was light reading, and as Otto said, didn't quite make it into the details. I hate to say it, but Trains magazine articles seem to do this a lot in general. I think it has something to do with the new art staff and copy editors. Having worked in the graphics industry for a...

I have the slightly older model of the same camera with the 40GB HD, and I can chime in on the quality of the footage. I would like to make one suggestion, which will help extend the life of your camera. Pick up a UV filter. This will keep any debris from going into the shutter mechanism should some...

Speaking of track work, I saw a maintenance crew and equipment in Nashua, NH yesterday afternoon; must be the big push before winter sets in. They've been busy in Lowell now too along the N. Chelmsford line in and around School Street and UMA Lowell. I've catching sightings of them as I take the bu...

Oh, I did read someplace that someone had found an old locomotive in the "graveyard" in Iron Horse Park. They took it out, restored it, and it is now sitting on tracks in Lowell, MA - part of the "Lowell National Historical Park" (and "Lowell Heritage State Park"). B&a...

I did see a 1966 summer timetable, so I imagine it was not much longer after that. This sounds about right. I was about 5 at the time, and I remember my cousin (grandmother's cousin actually) taking the train down from Alton Bays during this time. In 1965/66 the service was an RDC or perhaps 2-cars...

I remember old New Haven Geeps servicing the industrial park and sitting at Metacross street yard when I was a kid. When I worked in Lowell during the early 1980s before Guilford, there was always a string of hoppers and other cars on the branch. These weren't MOW cars in storage, these were actuall...

I say replace the track on the WHOLE ROUTE! Get rid of the bikes!!! (insert evil laugh here) I agree. I remember when the branch was used for trains and became deeply saddend when it became a bike route. The good news is the ROW has been preserved, the bad news is who knows if it would ever be used...

I recall seeing some former yard tracks in Lowell (Baldwin Street) that dated back to the 1890s. There were some disused switch stands there as well. The yard track was no longer attached to the main that went by and the track was weeded up pretty high. There was also some rail of the same vintage i...

If you do get hired by a railroad into management right away, expect to be in any one position no more than 2 to 3 years. Best of luck I wish that were true right now. Given the economy it may be longer than that. BUT, as in all things, being in the right place at the right time, has always worked ...
