Re: Amtrak Gateway Tunnels - Freight Usage

As you noted, the PA's only reason for being created was to build a rail tunnel. It's not about Manhattan except that it avoids freight trucking through Manhattan to get to the 4 counties of Long Island. And that is still badly needed. Now I don't know what it would take, but like Congressman Jerry...

Gents, let us not lose sight that states subsidize trains with the intent of bringing people to attractions WITHIN their state, and not for people to ride THROUGH their state. While an overnight train on a schedule emulating the Montrealer or the Montreal Limited (did the Rutland RR ever have one o...

On modern cars that is also the crumple zone , and there will be signs not to linger in that area. Not just modern cars. I think there have been signs telling passengers not to linger in vestibules for as long as there have been vestibules. With regard to Superliners and the center of gravity, etc....

Now that the Ethan Allen is most certainly being extended to Burlington Union Station. Is there any effort/political will for Vermont's dream Ethan Allen alignment? ... Entering Vermont at its Southeasterly corner near North Bennington and running completely through VT to Burlington? This would prov...

The truth about drugs and weapons on trains is. I'll site two cases, first a gentleman that rode a couple of times a month with nothing more than a backpack and a wonderful hand carved walking stick. Nice guy always sat and talked with the crew. The regulars stopped seeing him and later found out h...

Mr. West Point, I think before any mass transit agency looks too far into the future nowadays, they must determine what permanent effect the post-COVID era will have on the patterns of their ridership. It would be pointless to spend anyone's $$$, be it Joes's infrastructure (he will get something e...

A set pulled into Bronxville early one morning a couple months ago and I think everyone on the platform, self included, did a double-take.

My understanding from the reading I have done is the Budd RDC services to Newtown, Bethlehem, and Reading were terminated by David Gunn (the EHH of US passenger rail?) because ridership plummeted and SEPTA was hemorrhaging money. Didn't it also have something to do with SEPTA wanting to go all-elec...

Probably on Acela, imagine the security with a head of state riding the rails from NYC-WAS https://wgnradio.com/news/political-news/glimpses-britains-johnson-rides-rails-to-meet-amtrak-joe/ I would imagine the UK's standards aren't the same as the US standards. How paranoid is UK's Prime Minister S...

This is a super-complicated project. You're replacing a moveable bridge in the middle of a built-up urban area. And that bridge, although small, is essential to the functioning of the primary rail link between New England and the rest of the country. Zero room for error. Little might be visible on t...

Re: Times Square 42nd St Shuttle Station Renovation

Just walked through this for the first time today-- taking a shortcut to the Lex from my office on 5th Ave. Have to say it's all pretty slick. The new configuration is about a 100% improvement for anyone entering at 42nd/Mad to catch the Shuttle. There's no guessing about which stairs to take, and n...

The challenge in NYC is that most of the equipment is bespoke, so you have to figure out what's going to run where and then you have the MTA/CDOT ownership issue. If there were extra M-8s after buying push-pull cars for Penn Access, technically they'd be perfectly happy running on the Harlem or Hud...

I have personally seen a sea-change on MN post-Labor Day, when the new schedules kicked in. The trains are full in a way that they haven't been since pre-pandemic. Stood on the way in from Bronxville this morning for the first time since Feb. 2020. Huge contrast from January of this year, when I was...

Do not know why I thought KCS had access to Chicago. Forget the CSX idea. Still think the Biden Administration will frown on this merger. Guess we will find out. KCS only gets as far as Springfield, IL. Only place they touch CP is at KC itself. KC-Chi is former Milwaukee Road trackage I believe. CS...

Hurricane Ida Damage

So I know all service is halted today because of damage. Lohud.com noted that there are washouts but didn't say where. And I know I haven't heard a train go through Bronxville so far today. Anybody have reports as to exactly what has been flooded/washed out/damaged?
