Some Ridgefield Branch Questions

When was the last revenue run on the Ridgefield Branch? Did it last into Penn Central at all? Also, how was it worked when it was in service-- did the local just come straight up the hill from Branchville, or did they cut out the Ridgefield cars at Branchville and leave the rest of the train in the ...

Blue with a yellow stripe sounds like VIA Rail, no?

I think clearly separating hard facts from opinion, and opinion from new original ideas on the topic would be useful. I mean, meshing the 3 together obviously is causing arguments, so how about dividing one's posts making it clear what is being posted, be it fact, opinion, or idea. That would put t...

It is difficult to avoid veering into politics when we are talking about publicly-funded animals like Amtrak and the various commuter agencies. Perhaps us members should be reminded to think before we post-- i.e., hit the "Preview" button and read your post twice before you hit "Submi...

It's just easier taking a Harlem Line train from Golden's Bridge to GCT, it's only 43 miles. To take a train from Branchville to GCT is 53 miles plus a lot of very slow tracks. The most convenient Harlem Division station for Ridgefield is Katonah. That's where the bus service goes (not to Purdy's, ...

I think this is something that deserves more attention than it's gotten. The way Metro-North has become a valued regional transportation asset for more than just regular commuters is beneficial on many levels-- not least in getting a greater portion of the public, and by extension the politicians, i...

Sounds like I should quit my job and just get a contract from the State of CT to "study" transportation... would probably pay better, and all I'd need to do is be on rr.net all day

First thing that occured to me when I read the above is, who on Earth is riding a bike from GCT to wherever they need to go in Manhattan? Even if you work in Stamford, the vast majority of office space is downtown near the train station (to accomodate reverse commuters from NYC); many of the compani...

Was Boston - Montreal service ever offered via Portland in the past, via either the Grand Trunk or the Mountain Division? To the best of my knowledge, no, and I'm reasonably cognizant of New England railroad history. There was definitely no through service between the Grand Trunk and Maine Central....

Given equipment servicing needs, etc., would Montreal - Portland service in fact be Montreal - Portland - Boston? Was Boston - Montreal service ever offered via Portland in the past, via either the Grand Trunk or the Mountain Division?

"versus going through urban Connecticut, Providence and Boston." URBAN Connecticut?? Can you name any urban areas between New Haven and Providence? (Mighty New London, by the way, has a scant 25,000 residents.) LOL you mean the mighty Borough of Stonington doesn't count? To be fair, thoug...

Why even suggest dumping Connecticut passengers on New York subsidized transportation. the current government is already doing that with Danbury to Brewster shuttles and Ridgfield to Purdy's bus. They are screwing the New york taxpayers at about 60 cents on every transportation dollar. The Harlem l...

100 mph should be the target. There are several rather declining cities in the area. Waterbury for example. Better transport connections might help to revive them. When my now wife met me off the train in Waterbury ten years ago she hadn't previously known there was one. It struck me as a quaint th...

Did the New Haven Railroad own stock in the (connecting at Maybrook) NYO&W? If so, what percentage? Also if so, did the NH influence policies regarding O&W operations? I seem to have a vague recollection of, back in the early 50's, talk of the New Haven possibly absorbing the O&W in wha...

its funny how basic things like electrification and frequent service are seen as unaffordable luxuries . jeepers , this line is only a stones throw form New York .the potential is huge . I wonder if it could be done with third rail? The EMUs they ought to use are already fitted for NYC third rail. ...
