To answer the original question, take the Septa train from Trenton and get off at North Phila.( the station before 30th St.), walk a block to the Broad St subway and take a southbound train toward Center City but get off at Girard Ave. Take the 15 trolley ( or bus) west on Girard to the Zoo stop. Es...

I usually stay there a lot longer to make sure I get at least one shot. Sat AM is usually a pretty good time, though earlier is better. A CSX has been going from South Philly to Pavonia (Camden) regularly via the NEC and has sometimes done work at Frankford and could be on the High Line between 7:30...

I was born and raised in the Lawndale section of Philly and a trip on the N bus to Frankford Ave. to shop was a real treat. I went to high school close to the Holmesburg station and and have family living in Mayfair today. I go into the city several times a week, frequently to railfan. Twenty years ...

The picture is in a published, copyrighted work, Bert Pennypacker's Reading Company in Color, Vol 2 p.18. I don't think I can put up on the net somebody else's published photo.

Yes, I saw those. The bridges at Germantown and Hunting Park Ave that are pictured were constructed in the early 1900's and the scene must have changed considerably by the time T1s were roaming the Reading. On the picture at Phillyhistory of the Germantown Ave. bridge you can see under Hunting park ...

Thanks. I know t1s used that route to access the engine house and this means they did use the Port Richmond branch. I guess what I need is photos of that branch near Broad St or Hunting Park Ave. or maybe Germantown Ave. from circa 1950 or so. In searching books and websites I find that this branch ...

I was wondering about a photograph in the Bert Pennypacker book, Reading Company in Color, Vol. 2. page 18 where a Reading T1 is pictured in what is described as an "unknown location somewhere in Philadelphia". I have wondered about that for some time but think I may have narrowed it down,...

I followed your advice and on Tues. I wnt up to the yard. nothing moving so went on up to South Amboy for a while. I came back and picked up chatter on the scanner and sure enough a train led by a CSX headed west. I caught it several times and got to Helmetta about ten minutes before it showed up. G...

I could be wrong about this but the last few times I have been in that area it looks like the right of way has been unused since the days of the B&O and the Pennsy.

Normal practice on what later became the NEC was the Pennsy practice of raising both pantographs. The usual practice in good weather was to raise only the rear pantograph so if it snagged something it would not carry away the other pantograph. You could usually tell there was dirty weather around if...

Thank you, Amtrak. The train arrived late to Boston but Amtrak got it back out about two hours late and despite the snow and ice got to Penn Station just in time for my daughter to the number one subway to Columbus Circle and her appointment. By the way the streets of mid town Manhattan were terribl...

Thanks; we can all live with minor adjustments in the face of what looks like right now, 10:10 PM to be a major ice storm in much of the Northeast with forecasts of major power failures. Reminds me of the 1990's movie, The Ice Storm, wherein Metro North cosmos were stopped by ice as part of the plot...

I made a mistake on the time. She is scheduled to leave Boston at around 7:00AM Weds.. I don't know the train number. The forecast is for snow and ice in the NYC region possibly (hopefully) until mid morning, then rain. I don't know what the infrastructure and parameters for operation are north of N...
