A bicycle can stop a lot quicker than a freight train.
I'm pretty sure that all of the crossing circuitry was changed on the Lower Montauk after the line was downgraded to 10MPH and the signals taken out of service. Gates now only become activated on an island circuit close to the crossing, and the train is supposed to approach the crossings prepared to...
That crossing has been notorious over the years for tractor trailer vs train incidents. However with the line downgraded to 10MPH I'm a little surprised at the amount of damage. I'm not sure but aren't those crossings adjusted to only go down when the train is on the island circuit? The 151 has been...
Maybe with this new power coming they can run 100 car trains.Don't think the 100 car trains are very likely. Nowhere to hide the train and/or clear up. From what I've heard, they will try to keep train lengths at 70 car max.
You get quite a few of them when you work in a place like that. I've always wanted to put a book together of stories like this. I might just do it in my spare time.
True story... I remember back about 10 years ago the RS-302 was coming back on the branch on a Friday night and a trespasser tried riding on one of the freight cars unbeknownst to the crew. He slipped off, fell under the car, where an arm and a leg were cut off, and he subsequently bled to death and...
I can put an Unstoppable poster up on my wall in my office. It doesn't mean the movie was filmed there.
Take it to the bank...Nothing in that movie was filmed at NYA, despite what the newsletter editor believes.
No scenes from Unstoppable were filmed on NYA. The list in that newsletter is by no means a complete list of films and TV shows that were shot on NYA property. One of the earlier films not listed was "The Sweet and Lowdown" by Woody Allen. Several scenes were shot at Fresh Pond and the mai...
Gotta watch out for those "uppity" Brentwood residents!
Freightguy is correct. It is more economical to buy the car and scrap it than for LIRR to use a crane to re-rail it, and then make repairs to the car to make it good as new.
The fact that overhead power wires are also in the mix above the car also made the crane move impractical.
There's a good chance they haven't had to pay the maintenance fees on that switch for awhile now anyway. All they would have to do is notify LIRR that they will not be using the switch anymore. If LIRR chose to, they could just remove the switch if they wanted.
Doesn't sound right to me. LIRR frowns on 6 axle locos operating over their system.
However you bring up a good point, if these costumers are still around after the double tracking project some sort of crossover is going to have to be put in to be able to get back east to Pineaire. It will be interesting to see what they will do. I doubt they will want freights running all the way...
Red paint may have been around, but red Scotchlite paint was invented I believe around 1973. This is also when highway barricades went to orange as well.
