Dick, I'm assuming the creamery you speak of was serviced by the P.R.R. who still had the ability to ship to Andover via the L&HR.not sure about the Stillwater connection, my guess is that maybe the L&NE dropped off at Augusta to Sussex Branch DLW, then onto Hoboken.

Apparently they made tear gas, later on cosmetics. It's a superfund cleanup site now. You can smell the Benzene percolating through the ground to the point where you can get nauseous while hiking through there. It was quite the juxtaposition- a modern-day chemical manufacturing plant in the middle o...

Joe, love the stories, keep 'em coming. Do you remember anything about the chemical plant in Alphano? just east of Great Meadows? it was called Gamma Chemicals, later Ashland Chemicals.

just to add to jmchit's wonderful stories, Kramer was the ashphalt/tar plant at intersection of Rt 46 and Pequest Road, and there was a siding there..Pequest Siding for the station and tar plant. Right now the site is an empty parking lot where an occasional tractor trailer parks. A fenced in area a...

The track from Hudson Junction northeastward to Maybrook is no longer there. The old LHR is now connected to the former Erie Graham Line at Hudson Junction about a mile north of Girarde Station grounds. The abandoned ROW of the LHR is very overgrown through this region.

Unfortunately, Island Park went belly-up last year. Had many fond memories of my band playing there since 2005. The pool was just filled in at that time, but they did have bands playing outside in the back grove. If you walked near the old horseshoe pits in the back, you could clearly see the LHR's ...

JM,
thanks for sharing your stories, keeps the LHR alive. Thanks especially for the BK info, think I have a few pics of it. Do you attend the annual LHR vets dinners? I've been going the past 5 years-wonderful time and people.

Heading northeast towards Greycourt, the station and freight house sat on the left, there was a lumber company on the left as well for some time. Origianlly, the station sat on the opposite side of the tracks. The station was not torn down but moved around 1968 and currently resides in Sugar Loaf.

Also,
any access you can get to NY Sanborn Fire Insurance maps-they are very detailed. Some colleges have them listed on line but you have to be a student or faculty member. I haven't yet run into a NY library that has them but I'm keeping my eyes open. Sounds like a great project Walter!

Walt, if the driver size refers to wheel size, it would be 64 inches in diameter as stated above. I'm not very good with actually knowing about the engines, more of a building and station kind of guy! All the info I gave you I quoted from an article about the camelbacks, none from my knowledge. Actually the pic I have of #23 is the same as on the railfan site, and it's the same pic in the Boyd/Antz book.
