We did not stall on that hill as much as we needed to stop to get switches....cut the train in half yard it and come back for the rest. also alot of brakes had to be wound on to keep the cars from running away. i for one dont miss that damn hill. and the ore trains.

yep,i was always taught to bail them off to prevent sliding and never had a problem.

if they had only the "big brake" as it is called,the locomotive wheels would slide if you could not bail them off (with the independent)when braking a train. Also the ind brake works faster,great for switching with out air in the cars. You need both brakes in railroading.

dear tiredwife,if you made 100k a year and quit to fiil the void because of the RR job hubby has,good luck. The RR will never make up for that loss of income,been there done that.

Any train that was needed at the other end of the railroad was a HOT train on Conrail. Sometimes, if you announced to the dispatcher you had 9 hours on duty, you might become a hot train as you were now a 'short timer.'
