Re: Wakefern /Grocery Haulers, Elizabeth, NJ

Thanks again. I'd love to know why they stopped using rail but I would imagine that the answers would be the usual litany of complaints about service and pricing. We were only about 20 road miles from them and, though a very active rail receiver, hadn't shipped by rail in decades. Such a short move ...

I was just speaking with my family about low inventory management and how it is one of the largest contributing factors in the so-called "driver shortage" as that term pertains to CDL operators. Rails are simply not set up for this sort of business outside of various intermodal lanes. Even...

It's all 'bout the Bennies everywhere, not just in our great nation. Even our communist friends want good jobs and big houses now.

Last I checked it out, back before my employer burned down and we shipped so many, many loads by truck there, I recall a line into the building proper that obviously had not been used in some time. I see no evidence of that configuration on aerials so my memory must be lousy. If you happen to ever b...

It's like government bureaucracy. Just keep adding layers (or carriers in this case).

Nice study. Thank you, Jersey taxpayers, for it. Okay, I like getting hate mail sooo.... It would seem to me, as an avid fan of all modes of rail transit mind you, that it is ridiculous to include light rail if we're just going to pave the branch. If we were going to serve Downtown with light rail a...

Not exactly up to snuff on NJT labor contracts and whatnot but isn't NJT short-staffed thus requiring no loss of union jobs if the line were to be converted? Or would the objection be to the loss of the positions (multiple crews) as union positions? Sorry, was replying to what I thought was the last...

Dang. So this isn't prophetic of things to come.

Agreed on pretty much everything JohnFromJersey said. Environmental laws helped to shut down a plant I worked at many moons ago. We're not all that far apart in our assessment of the situation. I just try to point out divergent views on most issues that matter to me so the conversations aren't in ap...

Never hurts to diversify one's readership base, provided it doesn't somehow alienate the base, IMO.

It might be worth noting that sometimes companies, when issuing press releases about sensitive topics such as facility closures, tend to lay the blame upon the easy whipping boys of labor, tax, and environmental laws, none of which tend to get the full-throated defense each deserves and are easy boo...

Okay, so my comprehension, reading needs work. Yes, bracdude is right when he posits that rail will certainly (sometimes) deliver railcars somewhat faster than the normal schedule generally allows. He is also very right when he suggests that such moves come at a price. Blocking commodities by units ...

Depends on lane, commodity carried, distance hauled and so forth. A company I worked for split some loads between truck and rail for a move of around 900 miles or thereabouts and rail was a little cheaper, but that was for a very, very heavy commodity. Rail simply isn't set up for moving loads that ...

There are some high-volume products that are a good fit, it's just a hard sell when telling a prospective customer that his or her product might be there in a few days...or weeks. Truckers can do in a half day what it takes a railroad a week or more to accomplish...and I love railroads. But facts ar...

And, though it is as off-topic as the post it responds to, lack of labor laws has led to some of this nation's worst disasters. See "accidents, mining" if you don't believe me.

Excellent points, rr503. Just in time logistics has also destroyed rail's competitiveness.
