More specifically, how were the heavy chains connected to the trucks on passenger cars? Were they welded to the truck frame, and then, to the car frame? Were there some type of connector used? Photos of such arrangements are rare and I have not been able to locate any. I have been told the roads use...

I agree with CNJ999. I am 56 years old and have been in the hobby since 1972. For those of us who are of my age group or older, I believe we have seen the best years of our hobby. Maybe we didn't always operate prototypical equipment for our chosen road, but, we certainly could be sure of being able...

Engineer Pay

I have read that at one time, an engineer's rate of pay was based on the type of service he was in, plus, the locomotive's weight (weight on drivers). Is this method still in practice? How did (or would) they calculate the rate of pay if there were more than one locomotive in the consist (diesels)? ...

Jim1348, After I sent my question, I was speaking with my brother and he recalled that after our father passed we had traveled to the local Soc. Sec. office to take care of some matters. The older lady who waited on us, upon seeing our father's number, remarked that she had not seen "one of tho...

Excuse me if I am in the wrong place to ask this question. Both my Grandfather and Father worked for the Railway Express Agency. At the time they began work, they were issued new Social Security cards containing a number indicating they were railroad workers / in the railroad retirement system. I be...

Does CSX still operate any "dedicated" yard switchers / jobs in Watertown or Massena?
If not, how do they operate these yards?

joha107 - good information, thanks for sharing. You mentioned Beauharnois, Quebec in your response.
Is that a major yard for CN, or, is it a CSX facility? What symbols are now running on this line?
Thanks in advance.

Am looking for some guidance. Besides the monthly model railroad magazines, can anyone direct me to any other publications or books that would give tips, techniques, etc. on correctly modeling heavyweight passenger cars? Specifically, the outside appearance of these cars, not the interior appearance...

Engineer Spike - I agree with your thoughts. One item is brought out by someone, then, everyone does their version. As I have said in various other sites on this forum, I will not pay the prices that are now being charged for model locomotives. I don't care how well detailed they are. Quite honestly...

I have noticed that too. I thought this new facility was supposed to add to the traffic volume on this line. I watched a northbound go through Canton the other day with two high horsepower units and only 19 cars - 17 empty stacks and two tanks. It was the only train that came through Canton that day...

I told you, train riding in Canada has been a while for me!

I would think that it should keep the unit trains rolling. No other feasible way to get the alumina ore to Massena. Trucks certainly cannot do it. From what I have heard, they will be producing the same amount of molten aluminum now as they were prior to the Nov. 2 closure announcement. Hope this he...
