Isn't that the truth! In the Penn Central days, I remember them leaving Watertown with
6 units with the hope they would still have 4 running when they got to Massena!

xtcbct - Thanks for the info. I remember from years ago, ads in Trains Magazine for Paul Yorkis selling conductor hats. Have not seen the ad in a long time, so, figured he was out of business. Do you have any contact information for him? Have tried Keystone Cap, and Midway Cap, but, they are very sl...

Can anyone provide me with suppliers of "new" conductor uniform caps? Who does
your organization use? How about cap badges? As a last resort, would the "fireman's bell top"
cap be appropriate? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone know if the Potsdam Paper Mill in Unionville still receives or ships anything by rail? Off-hand, North of Watertown, approximately how many customers are still left for the locals to serve? Yesterday, I had someone ask me if this line is now no more than a bridge line, especially with th...

Yes, I too am "real late" to this thread. Does anyone know if these two guys are still
in business, or, if they may consider another run of these great caps? I would love to
own a couple or more! The repro. blue and white one now made by Kromer is a poor
and pathetic example! Thanks.

It has been posted here that the new intermodals will re-crew at Massena before continuing on to Canada. How does this work with the current intermodals, do they re-crew in Massena as well? Do the current crews start out of DeWitt? Can anyone tell me how many crews now work out of Massena? Thanks in...

I know of at least one local that runs from Massena to Canton and back. They service the big Poulin Grain feed plant on the north side of Canton, possibly some work at the Potsdam Paper Mill. Not sure if they still drop-off / pick-up cars in Norwood for the New York and Ogdensburg Railroad, or, if t...

The last I knew, the bauxite trains (ALCOA) originated in Virginia where the product was off-loaded from ships. It may be different now. In the Penn Central / early Conrail days, the rotation was about every 14 days. That was for a 60 to 80 car train. For the power generation plant at Fort Drum, the...

Am a newcomer to the Rock Island Railroad, I am interested in any recommendations for books on that road. I well imagine there have been many written over the years. As a past fan of the Rutland Railroad, I know "The Rutland Road" by Jim Shaughnessy was / is "the bible" for fans ...

Noel is correct. The Rutland ran Mikados (their heaviest power) through Malone to Norwood. And, the NYC also ran Mikados up here. They may have ran heavier power as well. I have a couple of old time books from the early '40s which belonged to a Norwood based engineer that clearly indicate the H6 cla...

Local news source, NorthCountryNow.com, has photo of wind turbine blades going north
through Potsdam with two Union Pacific units powering the train. Will be turned over to
the New York and Ogdensburg at Norwood. The towers themselves arriving by ship at the
Port of Ogdensburg.

I believe the majority of "the young folks" are no longer interested in model railroading. In my generation (I'm 56), kids growing up wanted to be policemen, firemen, and yes, train engineers. The railroads themselves helped foster the latter. When was the last time you saw a railroad do a...

I had never heard of the conductors and trainmens rates based on number of cars. Were
these pay rates based on some local agreement, or, were they on a national level? The
record keeping for all of these formulas must have been quite a project for the bean counters.

Going along with this thread......up here on the old Montreal Secondary, after the takeover, Conrail continued using ALCO RS32s on their locals and in the yards. At some point in time I remember rebuilt units coming here. A crewman told me they were old GP7s and GP9s rebuilt into GP8s and GP10s. I r...
