CP would be better than G&W or Corman and would probably find the old Michigan Central preferable to the roundabout CSX (ex Pere Marquette route) they now use. However, they are in the midst of buying the DM&E and then will finance that RR's expansion into the Powder River Basin. Hence they ...

NS will undoubtedly look for another buyer - perhaps Genesse & Wyoming or R.J. Corman. Keeping the route in NS' hands will not be good for Amtrak over the long term if NS has no interest in maintaining it. OTOH, a low-cost operator could make money on the route and even get a contract from the s...

If abandoning the Rockaway line was LIRR's bonehead play of the 1950s, NOT acquiring the LIRR right of way between Ozone Park and Rego and extending the route to Queens Blvd. was the NYCTA's bonehead play of the 1960s. The gap between White Pot Junction (where the Rockaway line joined the LIRR main ...

While I have problems with his characterization of the Far Rockaway population, Mr. Tool raises an interesting point about the community's decline as an LIRR traffic generator. However, the causes of the decline go beyond changing demographics. The old LIRR route across Jamaica Bay, while prone to s...

Please elaborate, Mr. Tushy. What am I too sensitive about? People getting away with making misinformed generalizations that are often rooted in racial biases? What does that say about us if we look the other way when people make statements that can be construed as hateful? You state that Mr. Tool i...

Mr. Tool - Thank you for the reference . I looked up the information you cited and I think your conclusions may be based on faulty readings of the data. Out of a 2000 population of 56,184, 21,934 were in the workforce. That is 39 percent of the total population and 52.3% of the population 16 or olde...

Sixty-seven percent of the town now receives welfare and doesn't need to commute anywhere.
Mr. Tool - Do you have a reputable source to back up that statement or are you just another loudmouthed bigot?

The Montrealer did quite well on the trip north but this train did NOT run out of Boston but Washington and New York. The big thing again this train was its high operating costs between St. Albans and Montreal and the high cost of turning it in Montreal. This particular train was also affected to a...

The interurban continued up to Warrensburg: http://rutlandtrail.org/list.cgi?13H.ny.track I'm not certain how it went through Lake George. Any and all advice appreciated. North of Lake George, the interurban paralleled Route 9. There's a power line along the ROW now. My great grandfather and his br...

You're probably right since State College, PA, is basically a straight shot from New York out I-80 for 5-6 hours. the overwhelming majority of Penn State students reside within Pennsylvania, and in all likelihood the largest segment of those come from the Philadelphia area.
