Re: Acela II (Avelia Liberty): Design, Production, Delivery, Acceptance

I don't think they'll be able to do that since anything going into Sunnyside gets turned just by the nature of the yard itself. Acelas are push-pull operation. It doesn't get turned around. It wastes time by getting wye'ed at QN/F Tower in DC, ZOO interlock in Philly, COVE/TOWER 1 in Boston, or rou...

Any idea as to why there are there, and what condition they are in (like seating installed or not)? And the 4th car in the closer set - it has fewer windows. Cafe car? The two trains appear to have different configurations. Though that may be from having ends switched. One of those trains has 1st c...

Cant (no apostrophe) is the difference in height between the low rail and high rail in a superelevated curve. Cant deficiency I believe is how far over the "balance speed" for a given cant is. So a train with a 4" cant deficiency, on a 7" cant track, is going at a speed that it w...

As you say, unless they placed the platform so that the train worked the station while sitting on a grade crossing, there is no way the train would block anything. The monster freights CSX likes to run at slow speed block that entrance far more than a passenger train, even a long one that's crawling...

Is there a breakdown somewhere of ridership by time? Like is the morning rush at 30%, off-peak at 60% and evening rush at 80%? Those are just pulled out of my hair, but that's the kind of pattern I'm expecting.

What is the maximum speed when backing with a tail hose? I vaguely recall reading that it can be up to 30mph.

The only thing needed for Albany service is to extend the CAT from NYP about a mile. There does not seem to be understanding that using third rail limits speeds. Also, acceleration. That is due to high current draw at the 600 -750 DC power is too much for third rail shoes. This subject keeps coming...

So...either they're going to have to do some interesting switching at Washington for the LD trains and Regionals, or they're all going to be hauling around a heavy car's worth of dead weight for the entire trip.

Wouldn't Amtrak trains still need to use the Hialeah maintenance yard? If so, they can back out of the MIA station to Hialeah, run through the loop, and when ready, back into MIA. Yes. They would need to make a four mile backup move. In Tampa they do a similar move into the station but it is about ...

That wye would also limit Amtrak to two platforms. Even if they did their station work in one of the other two, they would still need one of the two close platforms for headroom to make the wye maneuver.

Re: Wacky idea for dual modes - third rail HEP?

Well, third rail is Direct Current.... HEP is Alternating Current. Not sure how much you'd lose in the conversion of single phase 600V DC to three phase 480V AC. (corrected to remove reference to catenary being DC) I don't think the conversion is the issue, they have to convert when they're running...

Wacky idea for dual modes - third rail HEP?

I know that the third rail dual modes on all three railroads (MNRR, Amtrak, and LIRR) run off the third rail "where required" instead of "where available" like the ALP45s and future Amtrak catenary dual modes do and will. There are a number of disadvantages running on the third r...

Is it more specifically due to the lack of door interlocks? Does Amtrak has anything between New Haven and New Rochelle that uses manual doors? The Vermonter?

I'm just curious, but why does PennDOT have to pay for the Acelas? Does MassDOT pay for the Acelas to Boston? Does Washington D.C. pay for the Acelas to there? Yes, I agree, it's unlikely that an Acela anything will run to Harrisburg without PennDOT, but why is that the only way? TGVs run on convent...

Why was CSX granted dispatching rights? Of the three major users (NCDOT, NS, CSX) they seem to be the one that would use that trackage the least given that it's almost at the end of their line in that area.
