Re: Old Rockaway Beach Branch Reopening & Port Jeff Electrification

That point mentioned by scratchyX1 about making the dimensions variable is important, since cars fitting the IRT, PATH, and CTA dimensions wouldn't reach the platform edges on the other lines mentioned, and cars for the other lines could be made longer. I was always impressed by the differences bet...

Quick correction, but I don't believe the Shinkansen uses automatic train operation. Its automatic train control system is more akin to advanced PTC despite the name.

This crossing is protected only by a crossbuck and a stop sign. The Chairwoman of NTSB is not at all happy about that. You know I have some very sophisticated cheap solar lights around my house. They charge up all day on sunshine and burn all night through. They have motion detectors and come on wh...

Actually I believe the Superliners have a lower center of gravity than single-level cars due to all of the equipment being mounted lower, between the trucks.

If it's still in use, would a quick Amtrak move cause a lot of disruption that existing trains don't?

How fast can trains travel with a reverse hose? 25? 30? I don't think that's much slower than the track speed anyways. I still say it would be best to rebuild the WYE there just north of the station, and do the reverse move on the deadhead, in other words, train pulls straight into the station, disc...

Well, people were expected to and are now riding subway cars (BART) from San Francisco to San Jose, a distance of 40 odd miles which incidentally is about the same distance as Boston to Nashua. Not sure why they ever even think of building this, especially when there is already a Commuter Rail link...

India is running non-well doublestacks under catenary at mainline speed. To be clear, their double stacks aren't even the well cars we use, they're standard height flatcars, with two containers stacked on top, running under 25kV catenary. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmNbqGp6KXU This video here l...

CSX dealt with catenary just fine on the Trenton Line between West Trenton and Bethayres. Even was good for double stacks. No reason the wire has to be constant tension/high speed. Just build it so that you can eventually convert it to constant tension. Constant tension is the standard even for low...

It looks to me that since the NEC tracks on the Upper Level and the Main/Bergen/PVL tracks on the Lower cross at a 90-degree angle there is almost no space for a direct connection between the two without a mezzanine, and no room at all for a mezzanine between the elevations of the respective platfo...

Another option for Atlanta would be to reroute the Crescent via the A&WP through Montgomery and Mobile. It might even be a faster route to NOL than the current route. Birmingham could be served by a stub train as part of the Connect plan, or the Crescent could even split in Atlanta and the rear...
