Re: Salisbury to Asheville North Carolina Service

The only way the service would be viable would be using a lightweight DMU that can get in and out of speed restrictions quickly, and climb grades like a mountain goat. Even then, it wouldn't be directly time-competitive with driving or a bus, but it would definitely do a lot better.

The best thing that can be done is eliminate timezones entirely and go to UTC as the standard time of the world.

So will the station be usable without the building? Or will any service have to wait on the building?

*SNIP* Interesting that Amtrak would convert HHP-8s in this manner, unless they really need to get rid of the F40 NPCUs sooner than later for some reason. The Downeaster route is one of those that is planned within the next 5 years be assigned new Siemens Venture "Intercity Trainsets" whi...

*SNIP* Lest we forget, Superliners have shown a tendency to "topple" a bit quicker than single-level cars. They also have ADA issues possibly requiring an elevator in each car to be deemed compliant. The Superliners have a lower center of gravity than the Amfleets due to heavy equipment (...

If you want to look at "profit" and make comparisons to "business" then you're looking at the wrong business. The commuter rail shouldn't be taken to be the business, but the entire state or region should be. If you look at it that way, then the commuter rail becomes one departme...

No, but vibrations from the track could seep into the lab and cause issues for the equipment when under test. It's similar to what's going on with MTA Maryland's Purple Line, where they're tunneling under University of Maryland College Park and... just as close to their Physics department as it is ...

There have been recurring suggestions in this forum that they could put the Grand Junction, which does run from BET just before North Station, through the MIT campus, across the Charles under the BU Bridge and connecting to the B&A just east of the former Beacon Yard, into revenue service to br...

There are reports that the "Night Owl" is returning on July 11 but it will not have a baggage or sleeper in the consist. Part of the problem is that 65/67 will be coming north from Newport News and 66 is coming north from Roanoke. Looks like a Sleeper would have to be added/removed in D.C...

Um, on MNRR, third rail reaches to Croton-Harmon on the Hudson line and Southeast on the Harlem line. Diesel service continues well beyond both.

NJT doesn't operate any heavy rail. The RiverLINE and HBLR are light rail. PATCO and PATH are not operated by NJT.

It's not the best comparison, but it's the best one I have any kind of concrete information on, but when NCDOT's Piedmont service went from two to three trains, I believe the ridership nearly tripled, 6,000 to 15,000 if I recall correctly. Is commuter rail a different beast? Yes. Is it still similar...

This may be answered and just buried deep in this topic, but how long is the rehab to the two exist tunnels supposed to take? In other words, even after Gateway is done, how long will we still have just two tunnels into NY from NJ?
