New York State says you cannot run any sort of combustion engine (steam/diesel/petrol/etc) south of the Harlem River (a 1903 law still on the books) except in cases of emergency. So when you hit the Spuyten Duyvil Railroad Bridge, you can fire up the diesel. Amtrak must have a lot of emergencies ev...

From the way that AutoTrain discounts in the Winter are usually only in the "off peak" or reverse direction, it seems Snowbird traffic is heavy and directional.

Thank you, this version of the Amtrak Service Standards Manual includes information about the new Venture cars. I have 2 older electronic versions of this manual that may have been part of a National Transportation Safety Board investigation or report. Should they be posted somewhere for our histori...

Amtrak could look through its customer feedback and poll its employees and find some places where changing company policies would improve customer service. 4. Possibly pay food and sleeper staff (or someone else) for an extra hour after arrival to get the cars ready for their next trip, so that, fo...

According to the Rules and tradition, the Conductor is in charge of the train, not some flunky behind the President's desk. If the Conductor want to make everyone walk the platform to the far other end of the train where he or an Assistant Conductor can collect tickets before the passengers are allo...

Only 42 seats and not sure how many the crew is going to take up with their personal stuff and setups. Someone needs to work on this first. Don't crews have their own sleeper cars? He means the train crew, conductors and ticket collectors, who do not sleep on the train. The On Board Services crew, ...

Low bridges, tunnels, and stations. Is a very long time to correct. Places that IMO that will never be corrected are [snip] PHL 30th street tracks 1 - 8. Philadelphia's 30th St. Station Track 1 is where Superliners are displayed for Travel Agents' Conventions. But they have to travel via freight ra...

At some point, presuming you have "faces in the windows and hind quarters on the seats", it is simply more economical to operate locomotive hauled equipment. More than 20 years ago, South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority thought that 5 cars was the dividing line with electric...

When 351 broke down on Friday the 7th, was there not a work train on duty that could have towed him to Battle Creek (passenger transfer to 365) or at least to Jackson where passengers could get off the train and with a second track 353 could couple onto the front? Andy Other posts say that the foll...

I haven't looked at those charges since I retired 11 years ago, but passenger equipment in freight train service may include a requirement that the c...
