The 1901 map linked in my earlier post shows a branch North onto a pier in Lockport, NorthEast of Keyport, but it heads out into the ocean. It would make sense that it was the original terminal of the line from Freehold. Now, was the line from Lockport to the East a branch of the railroad from Freeh...

According to the Atlantic City RR book, it had a branch with a very sharp junction curve to Ottens Harbor.

Probably not exactly what we're looking for, but this discussion in the New Jersey Railfan section of this Group about the freight service on the Greystone Park Asylum line of Morris County Traction near Morris Plains, N.J. mentioned that it was finally operated by the Erie Lackawanna RR. It isn't c...

A direct line, while shorter, would involve a crossing of Matawan Creek and its swamps, now called wetlands. There could be traces of the embankment, if it was ever constructed.

Do you mean direct, and not via Mattawan?
The 1901 government map at this link doesn't show a direct line, just the New York & Long Branch RR Cliffwood-Mattawan and the Jersey Central RR Highlands Branch Mattawan-Keyport.

Some roads at some times used "2nd class" for mixed trains ... or mail trains ... or whatever! I've seen timetables with 4th class trains, and not all timetables used all the consecutive class numbers at the same time. In the interval between Amtrak and the UP absorption, Chicago & Nor...

Looks like some splinters of old ties in photo 4. DOT may be doing a complete removal and replacement of all the paving and subpaving. That alone would cause removal of the track. It looks like girder rail, which is quite heavy, well over 100 pounds per yard.

Somewhere I read that one version would have the 5th and 6th tracks on the NorthEast Corridor, actually laid near Linden and Rahway, turn South of the existing line East of Trenton and run South of Lalor St. to the new bridge. PRR real estate maps seem to show the West approach curving through what ...

I wonder if it was cut back from Hughesville to Warren Glen before the end of service. I can't remember a crossing of Rte. 519 in Warren Glen in the early 1970s.

The Erie's Bergen Archways tunnels are kind of abandoned. The West end is very close to the West end of the Lackawanna's Bergen tunnels, and almost on top of the smaller and longer New York & Erie tunnel, which has air shafts. Last time I was there, the Archways were used as a dead end siding to...

I rode the mid-day R.D.C. round trip from Newark to P'burg, and it was like East 33rd St. in Bayonne at the turn around point of the trip: Nothing there at the terminal. There were 2 trips inbound in the morning and outbound in the evening. The mid-day "reverse commuter" trip was to swap c...

pre-"Blue Comet" Reading RR timetable that advertises Summer weekend sleepers from Atlantic City to New York. whose sleeping cars did they use? All the CNJ passenger roster info I have doesn't show any sleeping cars. Don't think the Reading Company had any either. In the old days, railroa...

Route 1 from Pennsylvania to Trenton and got off on 29 South. At the traffic light in front of the Katmandu night club I made a left. On the left I saw a side street next to some abandoned aprtments with what looked like trolley tracks in the grass. To split hairs, it's a branch off the Camden &...

Amtrak has bragged in press releases or their house organ about how they are saving money by not using all of their fleet and not having to inspect the idle cars.

The NJT ALP 46's often lockup when they are dead. I've been on a stuck NJT of this nature and the diesel couldn't pull us/tow us due to the ALP 46's traction being in some sort of lockdown mode. Will the rescue engine also have the proper laptop computer, since another post (about the June power pr...
