NTSB reports “When train 32N passed the next HBD, at [Salem] MP 69.01, the bearing’s recorded temperature was 103°F above ambient.” Taken at face value, the 103°F statement is plausible and seems to exonerate NS — the bad bearing was still well below the generally accepted alarm threshold of 190-20...

In the linked article, Amtrak confirms the truth of the ladies' story: In a statement emailed at 5:06 p.m., Amtrak wrote, “We do not comment on specific customer incidents. Amtrak is committed to ensuring the quality of travel and the safety and security of our customers and employees, and we may re...

One of your Flickr photos shows the concourse at Cherry St. The map is correct, showing only a ventilator in the 1400 block of Cherry St. and a wider space under Broad St., no stairs were ever built. That particular sign may have been on a side that was walled off for a storeroom while the concourse...

South Penn wrapped around the west side of City Hall to allow movement from the old 15th street station to Walnut-Locust. It was made functionally useless by the rerouting of the trolleys. My second image that I direct linked in the thread is taken closeby. If you duck right around that corner you ...

Another unanswered question from the old topic, which you may be able to shed some light on: the stairs leading down from the 15th St. MFL platform—where do they go? I will get back to you on this one as well. I have my suspicions but want to confirm them first. As the Free Library maps show, there...

1. Does the North Broad Concourse really lead to the Inquirer building? Is the present concourse bisected by the Vine Street expressway cut? Is there still concourse north of Vine? The North Broad Concourse shared space with the Race - Vine Station mezzanine, like at Walnut - Locust where the conco...

For anyone else that's interested, this map in the Philadelphia Library system provides a great map of the old concourse. Click the Pan and Zoom button on that page to zoom in on the map, and there's a ton of detail. It looks like it used to wrap around the entirety of City Hall. A "3D" m...

It's the South Charleston Pk. grade crossing at the Springfield Corp. Limits, approximately 39 degrees, 54 minutes North, 83 degrees, 44 minutes West. After the coil cars derail on the crossing, many cars stay on the track past the crossing and out of camera view until Railbox cars start derailing j...

Can the Alternating Current catenary in the Empire tunnel be used? Of course, that won't help with any detour to Grand Central.

Before the Viewliners were ordered, experimental Ampads were installed in the ends of 2 or 3 Amfleet coaches for the Cincinnati trains. How hard was it to do that? Will the Amfleet business car find its way into private ownership now that the current legal department hates open ended observation cars?
