I don't know if the rebuild was actually ordered, but I have read that the viaduct had gotten too decrepit to support freight, and even DM-C3 trains. Plus, it reportedly required ongoing attention to continue supporting M-7's and M-3's safely.

While I'm not aware of as many details as are some of the other posters, I can tell you that PA announcements did not exist in the subways in 1936. First, I'm familiar with the R-10's which were built in 1948-49 without pA and had it added later (1970's I believe). Second, the subway museum had an R...
A few remarks, mostly in regard earlier posts. First, the Bronx part of the Third Avenue El was torn down because it was originally built for wooden cars and couldn't take the weight of steel cars. In its last few years, it was serviced by R12's that had had the dynamic braking resistors torn off to...
Definitely, I like the R32's also. I thnk that the original aqua interior had the same sense of cool as the present interiro of the new cars. IMHO, they were better in original condition with fans providing a steady sream of fresh air instead of A/C, and roll signs at the ends.
I agree that form of between cars operation was very unsafe. I'm surprised it continued for the life of the R-1 thru R-9 cars. (Don't know if the R-10's were the same) Does anyone know if any conductors ever fell between the cars? I sure hope not. I'm amazed the union didn't demand a stop to that t...
the 32s and 38 were shifted off the C as of yesterday. the C/Rs, for some reason, are being forced to operate from the 5th car from the T/O, using the 10 car stop marker (now replaced with an (S) and the 10 car conductor board. this means when changing ends the C/R must move to what was the 3/4th c...
Thanks for confirming that the R-160 car links are semi-permanent. However, I would like to point out that you didn't address in the previous link how the carsets would be manipulated - only what car numbers are expected to be involved in the experiment.
Give me the old vintage cars anytime.
Thanks for the replies.
Can anyone tell me when exactly NYC last ran a steam locomotive? In revenue service, and also for regular non-revenue service but not as part of a nostalgia activity? Perhaps I can be told when last they ran steam in New York, and when last they ran steam altogether? Thanks.
One way to pursue politcial support for expediting freight trains to/from Brooklyn and Queens would be to emphasize the reduction in heavy truck traffic that is presently choking up the roads with traffic congestion and air and noise pollution. However, in actually pursuing such a thing, there would...
Regarding 11 car trains, how do they do that with R160's? These cars exist in 4 car sets and 5 car sets. That means that a train can only be 4,5, 8, 9, or 10 cars long unless some of the drawbar attachments are actually semi-permanent with a 6 car trainset being created in the shop.
My experience with smoking on Amtrak, which may be out of date is as follows. my wife and I travelled by Amtrak from New York City to Florida in January, 2000 and again in January, 2001. At those times, smoking was prohibited in all cars except for the club car in which smoking was allowed for one h...
