Yes - the plan is that when Phase III of the SAS will open (I expect that in about 35 years), the T designation with teal coloring will identify the service going up and down th elength of theSecond Avenue, while the Q will continue to cover the part of SAS North of 63rd Street, and go along 63rd St...

I expect that it will be a while until anyone will something significant to post here - even though I see the sense of having this topic. That's because: 1. They're only now just planning the early work of the engineering studies and utility relocation for Phase II; 2. The 1.5 billion is what Phase ...

I was recently in the Lexington Avenue/63rd Street Station. They had removed the barricades and curtains, so now each platform is fully wide open. The renovation is nearly coplete, and virtually all of the work that remains is cosmetic - cleaning the platforms and some of the stairs, which are filth...

Since I last posted - they shaved the tunnel walls where necessary so that all trains will fit on the turn. Work has been going 24 hours a day on the stations. There's definite progress at 72nd Street, where i saw workers using the elevators 2 weeks ago. But there's still more work to be done. I hav...

As to Phase I of the SAS getting done: 1. About 2 weeks ago, the Daily News reported that as a result of running test trains, they found that they would have to shave down parts of the walls because the R-68's were hitting them on the curves. They forgot to make the tunnel wide enough. I've seen ver...

Re: Subway Connections to the National Rail Network.

There are older, now disconnected, connections that would be easier to resurrect than creating a new one to 207th. Plus, that would be a really awkward, expensive connection in a stretch of the Hudson line that is very constrained. What older connections are you referring to? Would that be the aban...

A brief resumption of this topic: I ask: Since the 207th Street Yard is quite a substantial facility, but needs to have cars trucked in and out due to not being directly connected to the national network, has anyone done a cost/benefit analysis of running a bridge across the Bronx River so that CSX ...

I haven't encountered any noteworthy reroutes lately. However, one that I encountered in 1984 was a G train going from Brooklyn to Queens via the f line from Bergen Street to Continental Avenue. Along the way, travelers who were accustomed to seeing R-46's on the F were reacting badly to the decrepi...

amNY posted this article outlining a list of "must visit" stations in the system. While the obvious suspects are there (City Hall, Fulton Center, East 180th) there are also a couple of things that I could do without on there...like 34th Street/Herald Square. Also, of note -the E180th blur...

It's definitely sad that some people would do away with 2 train loads of garbage on a privately owned track in favour of having hundreds of truck trips on the same roads that they travel in their cars.

Beware of quoted figures of starting tractive effort: for several decades it was conventional to give this, for diesels, as one quarter of the total weight (on powered axles) of the locomotive. A reasonable rule of thumb, perhaps, since (before the great improvements in anti-wheel-slip electronic c...

Comparisons of T.E.

I've read that the ACLO RS-2 is rated for a bit more continuous TE than an EMD MP-15, consistent with putting out 100 more hp. However, it's rated for slightly less starting TE. While I'm not an expert on the applicable power curves, I'm still wondering - what good is the additional continuous TE if...

Renewal of NYA's Franchise.

I've read that NYA started operations in May, 1997 for an initial 20 year term. Now that we're heading into 2016, I ask: Does any one know what the prospects are of them continuing after May , 2017? Also, what kind of volume did they transport in 2015?

Nice pictures! But since that clearance is practically scraping the loco it's so close, wouldn't it be more advisable for that building to be served by a switcher instead of a geep? And seeing that NYSW is co-owned by CSX/NS... I'm sure one of those two railroads have an old SW series engine like a...

One thing that wasn't clear to me from the RS-3 manual: Was the long hood always the front? Or did the LIRR just choose to run them that way most of the time?
