Re: CSX unions negotiate paid sick leave

This topic was also on the CSX forum, and I reiterate the same response. Over the last 150+ years, there have been hundreds if not thousands of contract negotiations which have taken place. When a negotiation happens, the company has a figure on the cost of the total compensation package per employe...

There was nothing false about Mr. Norman's original post. A few months ago I got off the road and worked a local job. One of the job's tasks is to make up a road freight. On a particular day we had issues with the power. One unit had a bad headend device, which still didn't work in spite of swapping...

Even with every existing employee being used just about every available amount of time, they’re still short. Any problem when a train crew fails to make it in, the whole railroad falls on its ass. Especially with the shortages and the STB hearings last fall, the railroads have stepped up hiring. The...

I never asked my uncle before he passed away about the compatibility of the Long Island and PRR cab signals. Dos LIRR equipment need to conform or are they required to use the PRR system on the lines into Penn Station?

I remember the Congressional cars on he Adirondack service. Back around 2002 I got cut off in Saratoga. I was able to hold a job in Buffalo, then ride home on my days off. One trip home we had one of these cars in the train. I made sure to move my seat to that car because it rode better and had more...

The true question is this the ridership for the train between New York and Burlington or did they break it down and just look at the numbers between Albany Rutland and Burlington. I'm guessing they did not. Eight thousand butts in seats between Albany and Burlington sounds kinda wishful. I was work...

It's a shame they can't run it a bit further - Saratoga could do with the additional service. Probably a few more. I'm involved with governmental affairs with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Over the last couple of years I'd tried to see about getting the train reinstated to Plattsburgh. T...

In my opinion the crew shortage is self manufactured. In light of the PSR related goods shortages, the railroads have been encouraged to hire by the government. They still want to keep the employment levels low, in order to keep with the PSR business model. It seems like the railroads do everything ...

This is just window-dressing for a bigger issue. First, the lack of paid sick days is a norm for the industry. Who knows why it's that way. Presumably the unions have focused on larger pay raises than on sick days. In the end it sort of washes out. The unions and the company take the total pay packa...

I do think that the SCL merger should have involved some line sales to another strong system, like the Southern. As noted, the single available flavor in Florida is a major issue. It seems like the ICC played the same game in many mergers of the era, mot all which resulted in a lopsided market compe...

There is one big factor in SP's downfall which nobody is talking about. When SP and Santa Fe were going to merge, they had already merged their parent corporations into Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corporation. When the ICC nixed the merger of the railroads, SFSP was ordered to sell off either one or b...

I'm in agreement with Hinsdale. It's a beautiful village around the station. A little east is the small station Hillside. Between the tow stations, which can't be more than a mile is a small bridge. Many railman photos have been taken from there.

QB, I think that you're trying to be a troll. Since the pandemic, they cut jobs and employees to the bone. This is well hashed out in this thread. Where I work, just about all the furloughed employees were called back by the summer of 2000. Only a fraction came back. You can't say that they were sit...

After reading John's post, I don't think that timely delivery of goods is even on the railroads' radar. With PSR, it is my belief that bulk customers are the only ones which they really are soliciting. This is because of two factors. First, there really aren't any other transportation modes for larg...

One other thought about sick days comes to mind. There have been thousands of rounds of contract negotiations over the last almost 150+ years since the BLE was formed. Surely, if it was a main concern, then it could have been negotiated sometime within this period. I feel that railroaders are genera...
