Hoosick Junction Signals

I have heard that the signals have been out of service for several months around Hoosick Junction. This is a result of a derailment at the junction which destroyed the signal bungalow. Has there been any headway in restoring the signal system?

CN purchase of CSX Massena Line

It has been announced that with the CSX downsizing that the line from Syracuse into Quebec will be sold to CN.I wanted to hear what ou guys think the strategic importance of this line will be for CN. Obviously the line will connect to CSX in Syracuse. Has there been any word as to CN gaining a share...

Re: Privately Run Montreal - New York Overnight Service via CP and Amtrak

There could be plenty of patronage on this corridor, and Amtrak is trying to focus on these regional routes. As mentioned there are several obstacles. CN has it’s turn job to Rouses Point, the NS trains which occupy the 2200-0200 rough time slot. What is the schedule of the NECR interchange job? D&H...

Re: abandoned D & H line south of Albany

The Albany Main didn't have all that much going for it. At one time I was told that the industrial park was a major source of traffic. At the end it was just the feed mill. One of the old heads told me that grain trains from down south were often routed this way. I guess that at that time there was ...

I headed through Mechanicville at about midnight Wednesday/Thursday and it was tied up in the yard.

Re: Rail crew Transportation

These companies are really scumbags. They really try to screw some of their workers, especially those who depend on it for a living. It would be good for someone who is just trying to keep busy in retirement.

Re: BNSF and UP PTC letters to Congress

The whole PTC debacle is self inflicted. Back in the 1920s the government had railroads install ATS and or cab signals on various lines. Over time many of these installations have been eliminated. This facilitated the elimination of the maintenance, of course, but relieved keeping a certain pool of ...

Not to be picky, but Alan Dustin is still with us, in fact just turned 90 a few months ago. He sometimes posts on the B&M FB group.

Re: Who controlled Central Vermont? GTW or GTR?

CPR does the same thing. SOO, DM&E, and D&H are separate corporations. I was in a hobby shop once where I knew the owner well. I mentioned that I had resigned BN for a job with D&H. Someone who was present insisted that I worked for CPR. Actually I’m officially a D&H employee. My W2 and BA6 statemen...

Re: GENESEE & WYOMING: GEORGIA CAREERS

I think that you have a good shot. The railroads like vets for a couple of reasons. First, they get government incentives for hiring vets. Secondly, they like the commitment aspect of a military career. Additionally they like the do or die work ethic which the service instills. I wouldn’t worry abou...

Re: "Red Points" on CP freight

CP doesn’t have microwaves in the engines, but CN does. They do have a refrigerator and hot plate. Most engines have radios capable of working on all the FCC railroad band frequencies. Canada uses the same ones. Some railroads have cab signaling. UP does, and NS and CSX do on parts of the Conrail li...

Re: Impact of Precision Scheduled Railroading on the Industry

I failed to reply to my last post about the MIT studies. For sure tight schedules are efficient in many ways. More car, locomotive, and crew turns. Better connections help too. I’ve seen the results of how customers are hurt by the new approach. Many times customers with 5-7 day per week service are...

Re: Cab signal suppression

As a result of the Chase, MD Ricky Gates incident, Amtrak had Locomotive Speed Limiter. Metro North uses it too. If a downgrade of signals is encountered, then the audible whistle sounds. The engineer must acknowledge the change. The limiter has a count down timer, just like PTC. The quicker you slo...
