I do not think they ever planned to build to Boston. You could get to Boston by walking a few feet and changing trains in Port Chester. The plan to build north from White Plains into CT was a different company that went bankrupt in the 1870s. That company may have actually laid some rails in Greenwi...

DL&W from Wayland to Groveland (timetable westbound) was downgrade, no need for pushers. DL&W had a coaling facility and yard in Groveland. Most of the coal to Buffalo was for use in Buffalo, including Lackawanna Steel. (not related to the railroad) Some DL&W coal certainly continued wes...

Re: NYSE:NSC Norfolk Southern Stock and Profitability Discussion

Most of NSC stock is held by banks and funds. Over 75% is held by institutions. The largest holder is Vanguard. So, that information is useless. CSX is 76% held by institutions, the same names. I posted on the CSX board that I would not be surprised to see Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway eventua...

Transcontinental Railroad Within 5 Years? Warren Buffett?

The dream of a US transcontinental railroad has never been realized. Jay Gould was on the board of DL&W and controlled the Wabash, Union Pacific, MOPAC, and his often partner CP Huntington controlled the Southern Pacific. He got sick and died before he could put it all in place. The Van Sweringe...

Conrail was a bridge from the past to the future. The success of Norfolk Southern and CSX proves this. Freight railroading in the northeast US is a profitable business. It took the death of Conrail's predecessors and the birth of Conrail to get the rules changed enabling this outcome. It could not h...

In the ICC 1923 plan, the C&O, Erie, DL&W, Nickel Plate and other lesser lines were to be combined. The N&W was to be combined with Wabash, Seaboard, and others. Reading was to be part of the B&O group along with the BR&P and B&S both of which the B&O later acquired. The ...

When the DL&W built the NJ Cutoff and new grades west of Scranton they did so without taking on any debt. They also electrified from Hoboken to Dover NJ and eliminated all grade crossings from Hoboken to just Convent Station NJ. In 1914 it was the highest priced rail stock on the NYSE. There was...

When the Erie leased the Elmira and Canandaigua RR, the Peanut was very important. Erie gave up the lease when its own lines to Buffalo, via Avon and the line via Hornell, got them into the Buffalo area.

Energy costs soaring, trucking companies cannot find drivers, container ships in holding patterns offshore Pacific ports. I hope the nation's 4 major rail operators take advantage of this opportunity that is being handed to them. I hope Warren Buffett sees the strategic advantage that Burlington Nor...

As late as 1965, NJ had no sales tax and no state income tax. Property taxes were levied to support the schools and the railroads were heavily taxed in NJ counties and municipalities.

Just prior to WWI the DL&W had the best balance sheet of any railroad in the United States. It had the lowest debt to equity ratio and built both the NJ Cutoff and the improvements north of Scranton without borrowing any money. Coal was such a great business that the magnate, Arch A McLeod was a...

My guess is the last steam loco in the City of Rochester was on the B&O. If not them, then the Pennsylvania. As already noted, the NYC and LV were out and the Erie likely was quicker to go diesel than the two coal roads. Of course, steam locos require coal and water. Does anyone remember water t...
