The E. Worcester block included 19 P&W's (9 RI; 6 CT; 4 MA), 1 G&U,
It's good to see that G&U's traffic is much healthier now than that one car that was interchanged in 1977.

Safety-Kleen in New Haven ships out waste oil.
Liquified industrial gases to Praxair in Suffield and Airgas in Enfield.
Cement to Palumbo in New Haven.

I believe Tresca receives flyash from the GU served facility in Hopedale. Cement would have come by truck from Coastal South Boston, which is supplied by barge. If barge deliveries are delayed then other means of supplying cement need to be undertaken, hence the rail move.

When Penn Central absorbed the New Haven they abandoned the track between Florence and Easthampton in 1970. The website Historic Aerials show the Pleasant Street bridge still in place in 1971, but I believe shortly after the ROW was sold to Western Mass Electric Co. and scrapped / bridges removed.

Flyash is also available from Dana's yard in Oxford, MA on the PW which is a competitor to the Hopedale operation.

The blue ones come out of Holyoke as well, transloaded by Republic Services of Chicopee
I believe the Holyoke operation is all done since Republic in Springfield now has rail.

Does anyone know up until what year the Whitin Machine Works was served by rail? Since Whitin had their own 65 tonners I'm assuming they operated trains on the street running trackage that went down present day Linwood Ave and connected to the P&W line near Rt. 122.

How will this affect shortlines that currently connect with CSX and Pan Am? (think Pioneer Valley in Holyoke) A great deal of money was spent to reconnect that interchange and gain access to an alternative to CSX.

Word is that MEC 354 is being leased to the Pioneer Valley Railroad, and that it will be dropped off tonight in Holyoke at the PV interchange.
