The number I got was around $80/day but that could be higher or lower depending on how many runs it does per day. Since diesel will run less pulling miles per day when 7470 does the Conway runs.

There’s been people retiring and new people coming in. Once the older guys left there wasn’t much left for certified fireman and engineers. That’s one of the reasons why 7470s rebuild was done by an outside contractor and not by in house personnel. Once all the new guys get trained and certified, we...

It's clear to me that ownership had a very tight budget this year, when it came to operating 7470 (unless there is some other unknown reason). I suppose they could have done what Russ did in the later years of his ownership and just operated the engine daily for 4 weeks in the fall and call it a da...

You shouldn't have to buy tickets in advance. The valley trains have been very full trains this season but with it being a Tomas weekend, you should be able to show up the day you want to ride. From my experiences working there and riding there, you really only need to buy tickets in advance if you'...

I am a long-time fan of Conway Scenic. I got to ride the Valley (Bartlett) Train last week with my sons and we had a wonderful ride! Everything looks, sounds, runs fantastic! I came away with a couple of questions/comments: - What happened to 4266? I asked around and only heard that it is in the sh...

Doesn't sound like a bad idea. The Conway line is already really nice. Not a lot of wooded areas, mostly fields and farmland. In the winter with no vegetation and snow I'm sure it'd make a great weekend run for travelers. Whether or not it's profitable is another thing.

Thanks, Dick! Didn't realize it was going to be that cold! Makes me glad that I opted to ride this year instead of chase. Any other rr.netters riding this year? Have a great and safe New Years everyone!

Completely agree with you Bill. Seeing 108 in action is something I've always wanted to see. There is a part 2 to be published soon, hoping it includes more 108. Seems like there was a lot more action with a lot fewer locomotives and track...more steam also doesn't hurt ;)

And I think you are correct about the crossings needing to stay because technically a train COULD still cross them from the MBTA switch from Wakefield Junction to the omelet place. But not only that, they have recently started removing crossings from the roads and also the crossing signs. They remov...

Yeah, I'm on Bennett which still has all 4. Main streets are still in tact, Richardson no longer has any (they were all hit by cars or trucks) and North has only two of the four remaining. There is one that I know of at a crossing just before the Rt.1 crossing. It has no lights, just a pole with the...

This is an odd question but a good place to ask it. The Newburyport branch crosses my street in Wakefield and is the only portion of the line that still has grade crossing signals. I used two watch these trains when I was a kid. Who would I contact about inquiring to buy one of the crossing signals?...

I thought this was kind of funny. I painted this a while ago. It was my first ever custom paint scheme. It's a GP9 I painted with spray paint and masking tape (not the best options ;) ) I painted this before word of the new geeps as a variation of the sisters paint scheme. Obviously not the place to...

No problem! Those signals are probably around anywhere from 7-10 years old. The branch will usually see 2 trains per year. They can't go very far because of a bridge that hasn't been used in probably over 20 or so years. Not sure how long the tracks have been abandoned. As far as I know, there are n...
