Been spending a few days shooting photos on the Transcon in Kansas. Noted a lot of left hand running. Our theory is that this due to the KCIMF, and reducing conflicts with trains entering or leaving the facility. If this so, how far does it extend in either direction?
When I came to the B&M in 1985 there were four turnouts in the area: Air Reduction Co. in Track 1 (the remnants can be seen on GE), in Track 2 almost opposite Air Reduction was what we called the Mortimer Middle switch, west of that switch in Track 2 was what we called the Powder Switch, and goi...
Interesting. That makes since. Still doesn't explain why the outbound train waited on the other side of the drawbridge for us to completely clear it before preceding. The reason is that by holding west of the interlocking he is looking at a clear signal. If he passed that signal, and then stopped t...
Put simply, the gates "time out". This is a very common occurrence at the Corlies Ave. Route 33 crossing in Neptune. The westbound train pulls into the Asbury Park station and the gates are already down, assuming the train isn't stopping. And now, the interlocked traffic signal at Corlies...
Val plan V 5-17 Sheet 20 shows a siding to Valvoline Oil Co. at the southwest corner of the Summer St. grade crossing.

The Worcester Public Library has microfilms of many of the city's newspapers (I have researched items in those papers back to 1879). An incident such as this would most likely be reported in those papers.
Since its right down the street from me, I'd love to see freight come back. Anyone know when the last time the siding east of the King Street crossing was used? I don't think it has ever been used except for a work train or MW equipment. It was put in service after Veryfine (or whatever name you op...
The only reason the first crane is there is to put together the big one.
The Welded Rail Train that's been stored at Beacon Park for a few weeks now will be moving Thursday morning. OD6AM...Will be dumping rail around the MP6 area, then return to Beacon Park. Talk is this train moves Friday to the Northside with rail for the Woburn area (storeon No.4 Track at Anderson R...
It appears that the siding to the plant next to the old Western Electric plant has been reconnected to the mainline. Two weeks ago I saw a high rail front end loader sitting in that parking lot and a month or so ago the gates were unlocked and two guys in hi vis vests walking down the siding. I'll ...
It is an access point for hi-rail equipment to put on and take off the railroad. There is not, nor has there ever been (based on the val plans), a crossing at this location. There is a dead end street (Holt Rd.) that ends right at the tracks. There are also no facilities on the river at that locati...

It was explained to me a long time ago at Winchester Tower. My father was picking up his check, and I started asking the operator about various signal aspects. The operator said to me, "Kid, it's either stop or go."
I came to work for the B&M in December of 1985, and the derailment had already happened. I remember the MW crews talking of the differences between the Amtrak and B&M track crews and methodologies.
