Re: Freight sliding back down a grade because of snow?

It sounds like you are describing the second train to stall on the same grade within days of the first train. The first train was #251 bound for Superior, WI powered by an AC4400CWM and a ES44AC. This train did slide all the way through the diamond crossing with the BNSF, just missing a BNSF empty c...

Rode Trenitalia quite a bit a few years ago And also watch RFW videos from Italy Why does it seem that (compared to at least the NY metro area) all the tunnels are incredibly dark and the trains seem to not use headlights? Because most tunnels are not lighted, and videographers don't change the cam...

For freight trains on Class 4 and Class 5 track, a railroad may reduce the speed limit for downhill movements (to prevent runaways) or, where that is not an issue, to reduce fuel consumption per ton-mile. I think that since generally the downhill limit is going to be less than 50 MPH where safety i...

So which is it; Standard of Wide? While the Baltics used to be connected by European rail standards of 1435 mm gauge, since its Soviet occupation, the region’s rail system adopted the Russian gauge which is 1524 mm. The article only "hints" of Standard, but does not positively say so. So....

With Hurricane/Tropical Storm Lee getting close is CPKC and NBS making preparations for heavy rains?

@jamoldover I’m wondering about that as well. I remember reading somewhere that KCS, NS, and CSX had some sort of disagreement about the speedway 1-2 years ago. I don’t remember about what specifically. Perhaps this is the workaround? The disagreement occurred during the CPKC merger hearings, CSX d...

I'll cross-post to G&W, CPKC, and we will end up in Class I. I guess the M&B will be the "new Pan Am Southern". Actually CPKC will acquire the Meridian and Bigbee RR. And will compensate G&W. CSX will terminate M&B's lease of CSX trackage from Myrtlewood, AL to near Montgo...

I would hope that having two roads available, such as is found at every US port, save those in Florida, would be a "calling card" to have more vessels call at Saint John. Let's hope this be the case and that Chessie can enjoy traffic at the same level as does CP-M. For if the traffic base...

Of the 6 CN is now the "smallest", with CP+KCS just slightly larger. So some CN & UP or CN & BNSF arrangements are possible. Connections from Memphis to Mexico. Is FEC now the small fish in the pond? Or would they have to split between NS & CSX. Of the big 6 Class I railroads,...

Conrail and Amtrak are run like private companies with government backing. This isn't like Europe where the railroads essentially have a blank check from the state to do whatever cool high-speed projects they want to do - they are expected to try and cut costs and make money as much as they are exp...

CN may need to find a partner.

Mexico would be a takeover target but for the cartels.
CN by revenue is bigger than Norfolk Southern.

Actually with the KCS merger, CPKC now owns 25 locomotives that meet Tier 4 standards. Former KCS ET44ACs 5000 - 5024. Funnily enough their newest locomotives do not meet Tier 4 because they did not have to meet that standard. The newest locomotives on KCSdeM ES44ACs 4895 - 4919 only meet Tier 3 and...

I'm not a chemist; what would be the effect of a trace element falling into a stream flowing under the track as the car crossed a bridge?
Considering that farmers spread it on their fields, not much, though a large amount in one pile in one stream would likely cause significant problems.

I would add that I highly doubt that the railcar, a covered hopper, was only loaded with 30 tons of Ammonium Nitrate. Most likely it was a railcar loaded with 100 to 110 tons of the product, and one bay was empty when the car arrived at its destination. The title of this thread is misleading, what w...

Than you, Mr. JayBee, for addressing Manzanillo, Colina and that it belongs to Ferromex, aka Uncle Pete. What I have no knowledge of is that road's arrangement with the Federal government. Does Ferromex own outright or does it hold a franchise with the FCM much as does KCS-M with the NdeM. If Mexic...
