I don’t think the Navy sees enough activity on the base for any regular service. But until south coast rail happens keeping the line in good shape for the N&NB is a good way of keeping the corridor in use. The tracks into downtown Newport absolutely needed to be repaired for more rail traffic. A...

Get 5 or so years with NS and then start looking at amtrak or commuter rail agencies to apply for. MUCH better lifestyle.

Lot's of furloughs going on right now. The demand for train crew in most of the country has decreased dramatically over the past few months.

Is it B733 that can be found serving the Mansfield area weekday afternoons? I'm interested in checking out the operation. I don't have a scanner so I guess I'd have to hope I luck out, lol.

Europe is a completely different game. Generally shorter runs with more stops. They have significantly less freight traffic too, so safety standards have to be looked at in a very different light. We have more grade crossings too for the most part. Look at all the grade crossing collisions over the ...

There obviously is a work culture issue on Pan Am but you can hardly blame it on all T&E crews as a whole. Granted a lot of them take advantage of the system but you also have managers who allow it and give little incentive to work faster, and upper management for not giving trainmasters and suc...

Sorry, 8 was a typo, not sure what I was thinking. I meant to put 10. :P My post is not entirely accurate because the railroad is such a varied industry. Local agreements, different railroads, specific terminal, management, all can change. But it's still the general idea of how everything works. Cre...

Road work - point to point train. On call, will run whenever is needed. Some runs will last 12 hours, when you'll stop your train, and wait for a cab to pick you up. 8 hours rest then you can be called up again. Yard work - Typically in shifts. 8 hours. there's usually always a shift going on so the...

The cheap, most effective solution is a greater public safety campaign. OL is great but it needs to be standard in schools and in drivers ed. It's not. It's not that hard to get everyone to understand the dangers of rail, and it's certainly cheaper than a grade-separated ROW and we won't be outsourc...

MODOC and similar places aren't worth the money. Quality educations but the railroads will just train you themselves. Won't increase your chances.

The Conrail split was a very different situation though. You're talking about taking an existing Class I railroad, with many thousands of miles of track and employees, and divvying it up between two other Class I railroads. There's no easy or smooth way to do that. A Class I railroad taking over a ...
