Re: GO Transit - Davenport Diamond Guideway Project

Yes - for its westbound route out of the city the train takes the Metrolinx-owned part of the Newmarket sub up to Richmond Hill where it reverses into the CN York sub. From there it travels a few miles east before switching NB to the CN Bala sub. The eastbound train does not follow this route - it a...

Re: GO Transit Rail Electrification

I have a strong suspicion that by the time electrification actually occurs, the cost/benefit analysis won't make sense due to the age of the trainsets, plus the added costs of operating non-standard GO equipment on this line. If Pearson's "Union Station West" concept moves forward the UP s...

I think such a proposal is unlikely to happen. Imagine the repercussions if rooms have to change for operational reasons and someone complaining about a few millimetres.

Let's keep such detailed technical info for folks like us who love this sort of thing. :)

Thanks for those corrections - I've pencilled them in for future reference.

Also super interesting about the "compartment" naming and the reason behind it - thanks for sharing that info.

Thanks for that info. I guess they're storing the chateau cars for a rainy day or to strip them for parts. I consulted my dusty old Rail Canada Volume 4 - it has the dimensions of all the cars Via had in the early 80s. You can see the measurements on the details below. Manor car bedroom measurement ...

Thanks for your responses - I was able to change my bedroom to F - great insider info! I've slept in the stainless steel equipment many times on The Ocean in years past, but usually in a roomette or section, and The Ocean typically had only Chateau sleepers - I'm not sure if they have the same extra...

Hey there - yesterday I booked my first trip on The Canadian - Vancouver-Toronto in late May in a bedroom. I've wanted to travel this train since I was a kid and I'm super excited to celebrate a milestone birthday while doing it. I'm wondering if anyone can help with some tips/info: - I'm currently ...

Re: Kawasaki Losing Money on Passenger Cars

at the moment there are too few DMUs to handle the ridership since it stopped being a premium service. I don't think that the lack of trains is the problem now - the problem is the length of the platforms preventing longer trains, and the single platform arrangement at union constraining movements ...

Even Nippon-Sharyo, who built the gallery cars for VRE, shut down it's plant in Illinois due to a loss of money. The building is for sale. Rail agencies are not ordering new railcars. Is this the same facility that assembled the cars used for the UP Express? I guess this means no more potential DMU...

Re: Big Increase in GO Trains

When I first saw the announcement I was looking forward to 15-minute frequencies on evenings and weekends, but really all this does is add this during the day, between rush hours. Still a good thing for transit overall, however, especially for the suburbs. If they can rely on a "turn up and go&...

It’s shocking the new stock doesn’t have AC. I’m guessing there’s an engineering reason why this isn’t possible?

Doing a quick fly-over on Google Maps it appears the only rail that was there before was a short stub section serving only the tiny bus shelter-like station. My guess is they determined that building a new rail bridge for that wouldn't be worth it - there appears to be room in the vicinity of the E&...

How badly were rail operations in Ontario and Quebec affected by the storm? Not much information seems to be out there (though there is a photo of passengers walking from a VIA Rail train towards the Dorval station in this article: http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/remember-the-ice-storm-of-...

Very interesting - I also am curious as to the reason. Thanks for sharing.

If I knew ahead of time I'd be more likely to book a special trip on the Ocean out east to visit family.

Dining Car Steward “we don’t take no foreign credit cards” .....me....”yes Amtrak does”. “I don’t” “you might not pay-up before you leave the country” So it was back to cash until we reached LA! Well it's at least somewhat comforting to know that surly on-board staff aren't just the advent of VIA R...
