Re: Wilmington/Newark Summer 2020

Any idea why the DE 3rd rail project is taking out Claymont service for that period? I thought the project was just between WIlmington and Newark, though there is a two-track section of the NEC just north of WIlmington station. Or this this just because of reduced capacity further south and some ove...

Let them have it. We have 4 stations within a mile of Lansdale Exton to Malvern is the longest stretch on the line without a station outside of Philadelphia. The PRR had a Glenloch station at the Phoenixville Pike underpass just east of US 202, but while standing and restored, it now appears to be ...

While I suppose it’s possible SEPTA could stretch the legs of the new ACS-64s on test runs that far west, I don’t think I’ve seen any reports of the first of the fleet in testing or engineer training on the rails yet.

Overhead an Amtrak employee at Wilmington DE station this morning, who was apparently awaiting the same train to DC I was on, saying to another that the test train would go up "today or tomorrow".

2308 was on track 0 @ Suburban with a mechanic in the cab around 5:45pm on Thursday 5/18. Looks like they were testing something, as they kept turning the lights on and off. Has SEPTA started boarding peak trains on 0? I don't think I've boarded a push pull on that track in maybe 10 years, and that...

While there are no doubt Philadelphia and Wilmington commuters that could benefit from SEPTA stops in Elkton and Perryville, I have to think it's more likely that MARC would go to Newark or Wilmington than SEPTA would go to Perryville alone, or overlap MARC down to Perryville. Presumably most folks ...

T2: According to SII's recent post the 7 car MARC set is used on trains 9526/9561. Another place to watch the SEPTA RRD train "parade" is at the 20th Street portal entrance from the parkland strip alongside JFK Boulevard. I know Bob is VERY familiar with that location  MACTRAXX Note...

Don't the SEPTA ACS-64 units start arriving this year or early next? As I recall, the order was for 13 to replace 8 AEM7/ALP-44 units, which suggests an order for more passenger cars is needed, but I haven't seen that. MARC cars would provide a logical stopgap for at least part of that additional ca...

I don't know why it was done this way, but as PHIL interlocking is laid out you can't get from 30th St. Lower Level to the airport except by using the escape track, which requires airport-bound trains to cross over--and I can't see them getting anything better than 30 mph for that move--, fouling T...

More interesting would be exploring extending Keystones that terminate at 30th to the airport, and perhaps the NJT Atlantic City line there to try again what didn't work when Amtrak ran to AC. No infrastructure investment would be needed for this, other than perhaps rehabbing the "Airport escap...

On Monday morning, 9212, the first inbound Newark express, was still running a MARC set. I forgot to check what engine was pushing it when I got off in Center City, but I assume it was a leased ACS-64 based on how strongly it accelerated.

The cars' interiors seem in pretty good shape.

The ACS-64 order is 13 units firm plus some options, right? This would replace 7 AEM-7s and 1 ALP-44, and unless they get the rumored bi-level push-pull coach order in real soon, this could provide extra cars in the short term until more coaches are delivered, right?

Several other "experts" on other networks were saying the same, apparently unaware of the concept of push pull trains, or that a train in push mode wouldn't have the engineer in the trailing engine. Some of those folks are aviation safety people who are "transportation analysts" ...

CNN is reporting that the female fatality was on the platform rather than on the incident train. I assume there will turn out to be more platform injuries but it appears that she was the only fatality.

While I'm glad this is getting press and a SEPTA spokesperson is claiming they're training more, assuming that is nothing other than a Band Aid approach, it'll probably take pressure from state elected reps to see any longer term fixes as the understaffing has existed for a long time. I've contacted...
