Wye moves in Montreal?

I was in Montreal the other day and saw an unusual move by the Pointe St. Charles Yard. At 2:50PM a Via train with 4 LRC coaches and an F40 headed past the yard, locomotive first, and across the Victoria Bridge. Five minutes later, the same train returned, now heading backwards, and turned to head t...

Re: 2019 Commuter Rail Delay Thread

Are the cancellations on the other lines the result of equipment being tied up on the Gloucester Branch due to the fatality?

Re: Interesting Consist Discussion for the North Side

I saw an outbound train this evening at Wyoming Hill that had a locomotive, 3 (IIRC) coaches, another locomotive, and another 4 or 5 coaches. The second locomotive seemed to be doing the work. I'm not sure what the train number was, as this was around 7:30PM.

Re: North-South Rail Link Discussion

Building express tracks for any of the subway lines would require deep-bore tunnels - just like the NSRL.

Re: New Orange and Red Line Car Acquisition Process

Looks like the cars I saw testing on Saturday are going into service on Wednesday . Pedantic, but I wish the digital signs said the more colloquial “Mass Ave” vs “MA Avenue” Frankly I think the static old printed signs are just fine. It’s not like this route changes frequently. Kind of overkill. Th...

Re: New Orange and Red Line Car Acquisition Process

There’s a test train of 1400s running up and down the entire Orange Line today.

Edit: it went into the shop just before 1PM.

Re: South Side equipment restrictions

They wouldn't necessarily need to equip all the RDCs with cab signals. With 3+ car trains, only the cars at either end would need them.

Re: 2019 Subway Delay Thread

One reason it's taking so long is that they have no choice BUT to install obsolete equipment, to maintain compatibility with all the other obsolete signaling equipment used on the Red Line. IIRC they're supposed to be completely replacing the signal system in a few years to enable closer headways wi...

Re: Dedham Branch

I don't believe the path across the traffic circle had anything to do with the trolleys. In both that photo (which is apparently from 1947) and the 1938 aerial shot on Historic Aerials, there are crosswalks visible connecting that path to the sidewalks outside the circle. Furthermore, the path is sl...

Nope, it's bus. It's offset from the rails.

Re: Dedham Branch

Judging from the buses, I'd say the trolley tracks were abandoned by the time the photo was taken.

Interestingly, the foundation for the bridge abutments on the north side of High Street is still there.

Re: Dedham Branch

You can't locate the ROW there because it no longer exists. Where the junction had been (and, as far as I can tell from old aerial photos, the station) is now Gonzalez Field. Pretty much the entire ROW north to West Roxbury has been built over, though you can still trace most of it in satellite imag...

Re: Commuter Rail to Rhode Island Discussion

The question is not whether a battery-powered locomotive can move one of today's trains at track speed, but rather how long it can do so between charges and how long it takes to charge.

Re: Grand Junction Branch (The North/South Side Connection)

There's some sense in the adjacent landowners acquiring the pieces of ROW next to their properties.
