LV article in the current Classic Trains is set in June 1950 and refers to FFW-1 as a "recently introduced" train (page 58). It also claims that it was a piggyback train, which is incorrect, but easily confused with fast freight (merchandise box car traffic) after 72 years. Elsewhere, I be...

Thanks for the 1953 schedules. It helps to know whether the LV retreated from 2nd AM service after 1950. Apparently they did not.

Any thoughts on where to find the schedules, before and after April 30, 1950?

In late April or early May 1950, possibly in conjunction with the April 30 shift to Daylight Saving Time, Lehigh Valley and Nickel Plate inaugurated second-morning service from North Jersey to Chicago, as follows: FFW-1: lv New York (Oak Island?) 8:30PM Day 0 ar Buffalo (Tifft?) 10:00 AM Day 1 BC-1:...

No photos, but I recall that, as of 1982, the TV terminal was at the north end of the street and basically squeezed into a narrow strip of property along the mains. Very cramped. Makes you respect how NYC made the SuperVan trains work. That is why the RoadRailer terminal built in 1982 was carved out...

The following information regarding completion of conversion to double track TCS is from NYC annual reports and issues of the Headlight: Buffalo-Cleveland completed in 1956. 27 miles of the Syracuse Division completed in 1957. Toledo-Elkhart completed late 1958-early 1959. Remaining 137 miles betwee...

Every group of employees includes some who are having a bad day. I experienced a couple as an Empire Service patron in 1971. Given the late running, broken seats, broken window shades, malfunctioning heat, broken toilet, and the hole in the floor admitting steam to the restroom, no wonder.

Elmira had a thriving industrial base, of which American LaFrance was but a part. Four of those plants were located between, and served by, both Erie and DL&W. In addition, you had the PRR operating over the Erie and enjoying rights to serve some customers. And you also had the Lehigh Valley sne...

EL had a perfectly good route to St. Louis under Dereco--the former Wabash. N&W and EL even instituted run through service. Did it prevent bankruptcy? Maxwell's proposal was to obtain trackage rights on Penn Central's ex-NYC Big Four line from Marion to East St. Louis. He recognized that it woul...

Starting at the west end of the bridge, the original alignment went through a right hand curve and then pointed due north to the east end of the curve at Castile. It was a perfectly straight line between the two curves, still visible on topo maps. In the first half-mile or so west of the bridge the ...

Why did NYC lease the Peanut in 1858?

Has anyone read a reason why the NYC leased the Peanut (Canandaigua-Tonawanda) in 1858?

The disparaging moniker "peanut" is attributed to Dean Richmond, the Central's most powerful director in Western New York at the time. So why did NYC take it on?

But the highway is straight at Union Road and is an S-curve at Broadway. Plus, I would guess that they were paving their roads by 1941.

The Erie's Union Road underpass was built in 1941.

Are you sure these are Union Road? They look more like Broadway. The Erie's underpass there was built in 1931. I assume the other two were built at the same time but have no info about that.

The shop has existed in one form or another almost since the arrival of the railroad in 1850.

The big expansion was in 1923.
