Re: GE powered MLW in Tanzania

This is at least the second time GE FDL engines have been used in repowering Alcos. A while (about a decade?) back, a number of Australian locomotives, originally built with 12-251 engines, were rebuilt using the innards of ex-Conrail C30-7A units, including the FDL-12 engines. (In that project, I ...

The cabs aren't much higher than American standard, look at the C36-7i behind it for comparison.

I've gotten the impression, from a lot of reading on the topic, that the (GE) electrical systems and (GE) turbochargers on the 244-powered locomotives were much more problematic than the 244 engine. You can still find the 244 in service today, but none that I know of have the GE turbocharger (those ...

The other former demonstrator, 636-1, was scrapped by/at Cartier after being used as a parts source.
The ex-FM&IR, nee-UP C630 (on trimount trucks) is in Pine Bluff, AR, in UP paint.
Not sure about the rest.

S-W was a sick sad joke that destroyed several major American corporations - but the 1960s corporate culture did that a lot. Look at the MILW, C&NW, CRI&P, etc. - all had a downfall that started in 1960s mismanagement. Studebaker, in particular, was mismanaged into oblivion by the same compa...

And, while we're at it… There were also the three ps (with 5'3" gauge trucks)exported to Brazil: at least one of them at least used to be in a Brazilian railway museum. Last report, it's still there, in horrible condition. The other 'survivor' was cut up a few years ago, with the cab becoming ...

Creeping Death-- Could you tell us more about this? Re-engining an Alco with a (GE) 7FDL engine sounds as if it should be possible: the GE engine is heavier, but not TOO different in dimensions, and it operates in the same speed range, so ought to be compatible with the original electrical gear (af...

Do you want to include RS3's outside of the USA? "SuperVia" in Brazil has two operating, 7113 and 7120. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=456745&nseq=17" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3308558&quo...

I believe they ride on (possibly slightly altered) AC60 frames, for the extra cooling needed.

Many Canadian Alcos had 75 MPH gearing with a smaller 18-tooth pinion, instead of the American 65-MPH standard 74:18 gearing.

Wow - amazing, simply amazing. And people say Unions are evil? Sheesh..... The same unions that caused GM to stop production in La Grange in the first place? Quality was so low, and cost so high, that the RRs stopped buying EMDs, which lead to this situation to begin with. I'm not sure the union no...

I'm awaiting C-280 powered 100-series EMD test units. I'm really surprised Cat hasn't bought a second-hand SD90 or few for testing.

the GE engine will make full power even with a cylinder down, the emd most likely will not... [i've seen a 16FDL make full horsepower with #8R conrod broken in half and the piston jamed in the liner... had 5' flames out the stack, but it made full 4400hp under selfload... and a very violent engine ...

Far from the first time a 'fraud' like this has occurred - and it looks like CN is likely just doing as ordered.
