Re: CR on the Southern Secondary

Back in the 1980s when I was growing up in Hazlet, there was still quite a bit of interchange between CR and the Earle Naval RR. As R&DB said, "commercial" (non-USN) boxcars were used. If I recall, quite a bit of Milwaukee Road. Rock Island, Soo Line, BN and the NRUC Roads (Middletown ...

As a quick aside, in looking at Google Maps, it looks like much of the track between Okerson Road in Howell and Farmingdale is GONE. There are several road- rr grade crossings between the two points and all of the crossings have been removed. Satellite imagery seems to indicate that the rails are al...

That is an interesting rumor. (I think) the Southern's ROW down to Lakehurst is owned by NJDOT, not Conrail Shared Assets. From Lakehurst- Woodmansie, the ownership of the right of way was transferred from Conrail to Clayton Sand sometime in the early mid-1980s. South of Woodmansie, at least down to...

SA-31 was probably delayed yesterday due to a car vs NJ Transit train at the Beers Street grade crossing in Hazlet yesterday afternoon. The Coast Line was down for a while due to the accident and presumably the freight was held in South Amboy until the scene was cleared.

CSXT was up in Leominster yesterday. I've been in that area for over 5 years now and this is the 1st time I've seen a train on the Fitchburg Secondary. Two 6200 series GP40s pushing a long string of covered hoppers, tanks (including two consecutively numbered NATX tanks) and boxes south. It looks li...

Is there anyone qualified to run on perhaps the most obscure MBTA-owned non-revenue line, The Greenville Branch? I can not imagine there ever be a reason to run on the Greenville, other than some MOW car storage past the end of the active line in Ayer (perhaps once the Green Line Extension really ge...

To elaborate on the earlier posts regarding Trains 402/404 today (Friday 2/6), Train 402 powered by 011, broke down shortly after departing Concord Station. 404 came up behind in order to push it all the way to North Station. 404 was powered by Screamer 1008. There were complications in executing th...

Never at Erving. RR was told don't set foot on property. I was told the same thing happened when Pan Am made an inquiry with Monadnock Paper, the owner of the paper mill in Bennington, NH on the old Hillsborough Branch. Supposedly, they were so jaded from the strikes of the mid-80s that the Pan Am ...

Train 417, the outbound Fitchburg "Superexpress" experienced HEP issues last night (Wednesday 11/19). We lost lights and HVAC systems four times on the run out to the 'burg. The cultprit was the 1126. Since 417's equipment is usually used on the next day's inbound "Superexpress",...

The bad week for the Fitchburg Line continued into Halloween Morning. Train #400, the first am departure out of Fitchburg broke down somewhere between Waltham and Porter Square. Attempts to get it moving again were unsuccessful, leading to Train #402 coupling on and pushing it running double draft t...

The Fitchburg Line has had a few ugly days... Yesterday, 10/6, Train 417, The "Superexpress" out of North Station hit a 1980s-vintage TV on the tracks in Ayer. That caused an air brake malfunction, which disabled the consist for :25 minutes at North Leominster. The crew shut down the locom...

Well, the damaged RCOX LPG tank car has been moved out of the Ayer Ford Yard. I saw it yesterday on the east wye of the Worcester Branch attached to a PAR local. It still has a pretty big dent on the left side. I wonder if it is going to be sent west on POSE to be repaired. This morning, I noticed t...

Well, I think I might have answered my question. On my outbound commute last night, MBTA/Keolis Train #417 went slowly through the CPF-WL interlocking and I was able to get a clear look at the cars in question. I "think" they are the cars that were involved in the Lancaster derailment. Fro...

Hi Folks, I observed something today which I hadn't seen in almost 5 years of commuting on the Fitchburg Line. There were several general freight cars (wood racks, and YKR and FBOX Boxcars) spotted in the "Ford" Yard which is adjacent to CPF-WL in Ayer, MA. The only time I've seen this yar...

With the Worcester Main out of commission for the next 3-4 days, is there a contingency plan to run SEPO/POSE? Can they run on the Boston & Albany to Beacon Park, then over the Grand Junction to the area around Boston Engine Terminal and then up the Lowell Line/Wildcat Branch? Not sure what the ...
