Re: Wreck Photos

Yes this has been a refreshing topic on this site. A couple of notes to add: 1) Steve asked if the sand operation to Bridgehampton continued into the NYA era. It did not. They stopped paying their bills when the freight was still operated by LIRR. NYA never moved cars for them. 2) Queens Interlockin...

Re: Hamburger Choo-Choo Restaurant

The building in Huntongton that housed the Hamburger Choo Choo at last check was a Japanese hibachi restaurant called Tomo. Last I was in the village, they closed and the building is waiting a new tenant.

Re: NYA MP15AC 159?

Did NS pull a page from the CSX/Selkirk Black Hole "playbook" and misroute NY&A 159 to the west?
Probably went on a train to Conway and then return on another freight or engine move going to Altoona. Easier than clogging up the Pittsburgh Line to set off a locomotive.

Re: 1970 Freight train derailment in Riverhead

The story I always heard from a retired LIRR engineer is the crew attempted to do a flying switch which didn't go as intended. (Dropping hazmat cars is a no-no to begin with.) There was a subsequent evacuation and obviously numerous emergency personnel were on the scene. Upon investigation of the sc...

Re: Future of Passenger Diesel on LI?

Could you explain a little more about the Glendale homeowners? What happened? As mentioned, CURES, the NIMBY group who were shocked to learn one day that their homes were built near an already existing freight yard, pitched a hissy-fit when the first two of the new locomotives arrived. When ordered...

Re: Woodhaven Station - Abandoned

Bad Luck Wrote: The parlor on that trip was the 2000, the Morris Park. Thank you, what ever became of that car ? Sadly, that car was subsequently used as a tunnel clearance car for the future bilevels, and had spikes attached to the roof as feelers to see if it would clear the tubes. The car sat de...

Re: Rail service to Calverton?

Didn't the Town of Riverhead keep 84 Lumber from using NYA service a few years ago ???
Yes. The Town assessed a building permit on 84 Lumber in order for them to lay the siding on their property. The Lumber company refused, and the siding was never built.

Re: Rail service to Calverton?

Anything new develop, customer-wise at Calverton? How often does it generally get switched? Not very often. Only one customer in there and they usually go once every couple of weeks to switch out hopper cars. Doubtful NYA will look to actively market anyone else out there as it's more trouble than ...

Re: Last steam engine on Long Island

Question, how did BR&W 60 get to Long Island for that excursion? Was it via PSNY, barge, or Selkirk?
I'm pretty sure the engine and a private car were floated across.

Re: Marjam in Riverhead

Cars of 70' of more(A frame flats) used to be banned from going in there. They lifted the restriction a long time ago. Haven't went past the siding in a bit. Not too far back there were lumber flats in there. Quite a few sidings had the restriction of cars 70 feet or more in length, but the Marjam ...

This study, sponsored by Council Member Elizabeth Crowley, will explore options for restoring passenger service that responds to the needs of adjacent neighborhoods, explore development potential to support passenger service, and balance the demands of current and future freight rail activity. Just...

Re: What's being scrapped?

LIRR's pioneer intermodal concept was in 1885(first piggyback). A few LIRR crews mentioned those cars were prone to derailments. Once a piggyback load of US Mail was left NY Crossharbor interchange and was torched by the locals. Needless to say the service never really got off the ground. Pun inten...

Re: LIRR Announces Launch "... ‘Fisherman’s Train,’..."

Looks like all they are doing is turning the eastbound equipment train into a revenue train. (Or should I say little if any revenue train.) It's another example of east-end politicians getting their opportunity to play railroad tycoon using taxpayer money. A few years back, these same politicians th...

Re: NYA losing any customers between Farmingdale and Ronkonk

Apparently the ready mix siding will be reconfigured as an eastbound facing point switch and come off of what was the runaround track off of the OLD DK freight siding, which will become the new second mainline track.

There is/was also a customer that took sheetrock on centerbeam flatcars at Medford Team. Can't remember the company name at the moment.
