My grandfather, Thomas A. Maher, was one of the Middletown Swing Bridge tenders back in the waning days of the New Haven Railroad. The attached picture is of him sitting on the bridge awaiting the next train. I came to work for the Connecticut Central Railroad back in the 1990's and was with them un...

We had several pet names for the sewer run: Sewer Chief, AM-BM (PM_BM) and Poo Poo Choo Choo, among others. :)

The Connecticut Central started off as a division of the Valley Railroad (steam excursion railroad in Essex, CT) as a means to secure revenue during the winter months. Trackage was leased from the State of Connecticut to operate on portions of the Airline, Berlin Branch and the Valley Branch in Midd...

Having worked for CCCL and CNZR I can attest that there was a very close working relationship between the two. However, I am confident that no paint changed hands. The RS-1 # 50 was ex-Washington Terminal 50, serial number 75560, built in November 1947 and previously owned by Solite as its #33011 in...

Yes...that shoofly was an interesting part of the job. The day crew bringing the train across and tying it down on the south side for the night crew. Coming up from New Haven, call the cops at FIELD, walk down to flag traffic after the cops blocked the road, then cross your fingers that the train co...

It was the darker blue. This photo was taken just after it was painted and we were moving it to the engine track. Compare it to the ALCO #36 to the left.

Connecticut's Busway

When Amtrak trains started running the extended Downeaster route in Maine on Nov. 1, Connecticut transportation planners should have recognized the message, Michael Nicastro said. Nicastro said the Downeaster route is evidence the busway was the wrong choice. http://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/...

All over the news and newspapers today. Looks like they are still interested. Not sure if Rell is going to pull it off, especially with the state of the State as it is. Rt. 91 is a quagmire each day in and out of Hartford/Springfield.

Now, having been instructed on how traction motors MOVE a train, if the locomotive is equipped with DYNAMIC BRAKES, the traction motors can be used to help STOP or retart train movement. They can be turned into generators to help dissipate electric power, thus retarding the movement of the locomotiv...

I certainly respect your opinion on validity of restoring freight on the Valley Line. I am not here to argue that point, just bringing up a news article of interest.
