Re: Kleet Lumber: Unloading Centerbeams

Awesome. Thanks for the information and link. I guess they would just use a standard forklift to move the cars around, and also put together the empty cut of cars for NY&A to retrieve them. Fascinating.

Kleet Lumber: Unloading Centerbeams

Can anyone tell me how Kleet Lumber in Huntington unloads its inbound centerbeam flatcars? It goes without saying that everyone knows these cars must be "load balanced" to avoid tipping over, and unloading must be done from both sides. However, Kleet's spur directly fronts the LIRR mainlin...

NY&A Through Jamaica Station

 by NYCS ¦  Mon Feb 16, 2015 9:40 am ¦  Forum: New York & Atlantic Railway-NYNJ Rail ¦  Topic: NY&A Through Jamaica Station ¦  Replies: 2 ¦  Views: 3284

Does anyone know which tracks (if they are assigned) that NY&A uses to pass through Jamaica Station? Is there a dedicated track(s) for the freight traffic, or they just use any available track? Thanks in advance!

Conrail Route Abandonment Regrets?

Hey guys, I've been studying the network of Conrail before the CSX/NS split, and ran across this map showing the railroad's network and how it was to be distributed: http://broadway.pennsyrr.com/Rail/Conrail/Breakup/main_lg.gif" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; My question is,...

Re: Could the LIRR Port Washington Branch be triple-tracked?

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think my "fiction" will just rely on enlisting the help of Robert Moses - him securing the promise of providing the ROW clearance for three tracks on the Port Washington Branch, as a concession for the Whitestone Bridge NOT being a dual highway-railroad br...

Could the LIRR Port Washington Branch be triple-tracked?

OK, before anyone jumps on me, I'm simply asking from a technical perspective. I know that no plans, demand, money, or necessity exists to triple-track the Port Washington branch. I'm asking this because I am a model railroader who is preserving the abandoned "Whitestone Branch" for an ind...

Hey guys, I've just been doing some additional research on the LIRR Whitestone Branch before *finally* beginning construction on my layout, and happened upon this thread. As you may recall, there was a composite image of Google imagery showing the approximate alignment of the Whitestone Branch. I cr...

Help: Norfolk Southern Map "pre Conrail"

I've searched high and low, and have been unable to find a map of NS *before* the Conrail split. Does anyone have a link to a map (the more detailed the better) showing Norfolk Southern in the early to mid 1990s? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Allied Extruders

Allied Extruders is, indeed, gone forever. They closed up shop and moved production to a facility in the south. The building was severely outmoded, decayed, too expensive to remodel, and covered in graffiti. This same thing happened with Wonder Bread in Jamaica a few years ago - New York's aging bui...

To everyone interested in CSX, its interchange with the NY&A, and operations in Oak Point and up the Hudson Line - Several MSW and C&D carters are in negotiations to switch from truck to rail as a permanent solution, and this would mean more traffic for both CSX and NY&A. Of course the N...

PRO-FREIGHT RAIL PETITION FOR LONG ISLAND - PLEASE SIGN!

The CURES folks are at it again, sending a letter to Gov. Cuomo and various "electeds" making a plea to halt MSW and C&D shipments from eastern Long Island by rail. The successful resolution of the recent "garbage crisis" has put freight rail in a positive light, so much so t...

Was wondering if anyone knew of an official or unofficial name designated to the CN (former IC) yard in Council Bluffs. After some online research, all I can find is "Council Bluffs Yard"... but I know there has to be more to it than that? Did the IC have a specific name for this yard? Tha...

Exactly. Fresh Direct could very well receive via rail from their LIC facility, and I think the empty promise of them "using rail" was simply a ploy to sweeten their negotiations for the Harlem River site (former Post Office site, btw). Also, the nature of the business isn't rail-friendly;...

Anyone know what ever happened to that Waste Management critter that was sitting in Selkirk a few weeks ago? Speculation was that it was waiting to get its plow notched and head south to WM Harlem River. Anyone?
