Student chronicles SEPTA rail lines

Similar to what Geoff Marshall has done in Ireland and the United Kingdom, Rose Cohen is traveling SEPTA rail, describing the stations she visits in alphabetical order! It is an interesting blog. See https://billypenn.com/2024/03/13/every-septa-station-visit/ --- Might someone explain the mixture o...

Thanks to John Perkowski for sending this inquiry to a more appropriate forum.

In describing inherited railroad pocket watches, I have been telling people that trainmen were first allowed to use wrist watches in the 1950's. I'm beginning to doubt that statement. To a large degree is a question of checking for accuracy.
Can someone provide info on this topic? Thanks.

Because this well-written book by Douglas Brunt ends with Rudolf Diesel's disappearance in 1913, there is little of diesel-electric railroad locomotives in it. However, the explanations of how Diesel developed his engine are clear and fascinating. The first diesel-electric locomotive was sold in 192...

Yesterday, August 6, 2023. I visited Bay Shore to observe westbound boarding. Half the numbers before 2018. No shoving to board Scoot 6461 at 4:58. It was a good day for the beach. The uneven bricks underfoot near the station made walking around risky for this old railfan.

The Cannonball, as in recent years, is scheduled to depart Penn Station at 4:07 and reach Westhampton at 5:41, 94 minutes later. Milepost 27 is at Seaford, but that is measured from Long Island City. Today, when will I see the Cannonball? Locomotive 520 headed it through Seaford at 4:52, and Train T...

My decades-long observations may be of little value. Of 365 days in a year, there is a repeated Sunday scene at the long westbound platform at Bay Shore, maybe eight times a year. Vans from the Fire Island ferry drop crowds onto the platform, and scoots of three or four cars get jammed for the short...

On Friday, May 26, 2023, did Train 16, the Cannonball, travel on the Central Branch? I see trains through Massapequa randomly, but around 5 p.m. Friday, I saw one or two electric trains eastbound through stations on Track 1. They did not stop. (Of course, my perception could be wrong.)

I bought two panes of 20 today. The stamps are large rectangles, width 1.42 inch x height 1.085. Excellent printing.

Railroad.net is a marvelous and serious website without abuse or silliness. However, I make a ridiculous proposal: On a westbound m-u train that has a fifteen-minute express run before Jamaica, have the conductor announce, "Where do you want to go?" and have the trainmen then take a rough ...

Jeff, this reply is based on analysis, not an actual trek. It would appear that some of the street-level exits and entrances near 45th or 47th street have been used for 15 or 20 years by Metro North passengers. That is, billions were spent on the caverns down below, but understandably the planners h...

Double track, but head-on crash.
The Irish Times gave the tragedy lengthy coverage.

There is one train that glides through Jamaica without a timetable stop, Train 14, the off-season Cannonball. It leaves Penn Station at 4:07 and reaches first stop Southampton 92 minutes later. I wonder how many miles that is. I also wonder it beats most Friday rush-hour trips of the rival bus.

Regarding the new center track east of Massapequa, it appears that trains 1120, 1124 and 1126 during the AM rush enter that track and wait to follow by 3 minutes a westbound that will run non-stop from Wantagh to Jamaica. There are a total of 13 trains in the morning rush that start at Wantagh. They...
