A subject close to my heart! There are a number of other unique details to the groups of RS-3s on the Reading, but we'll start with the headlights. You have to realize that the order that they were DELIVERED was not the number series! It seems that the Reading was trying to figure out its roster, es...

FUNNY YOU SHOULD MENTION THAT! Recently, when I was poking around in the Railways to Yesterday library in Allentown, I came across a newspaper article that said that the Reading Emauys station on the Perk was sold to a gentleman who salvaged it for the wood. Those Dutchmen were quite thrifty! It sho...

Hey Rob: Are ya still there? I usually check other parts of the net, and I stumbled onto this one and saw your post. I was just over at a friend's house and showed him a few tricks, so I'm "in the Flyer fixer" mode. First, unplug the tender from the engine, remembering which way you plugge...

As far as Lehigh & Northampton Counties went, LANTA wanted NO PART of any rail operation. That was like putting a cross in front of a vampire!! They were told that they could be used as a conduit for subsidies and they said NO WAY. The "T" in LANTA spells "bus" and not "...

Other than the engineers, who liked the way they pulled, the rest of the crews HATED them, what with those 5 straight-up steps you had to climb to get up onto the platform and cab, and their "top heaviness" due to the high center of gravity account the opposed piston prime mover, they woul...

Understand that Ringling Bros. Circus will be at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem at the end of the month. Any idea when and where the train will be arriving and where it will be stored during its show in Bethlehem?

I know there's a lot of excitement about this acquisition, but it is WAY TOO premature. From what I understand, it will be several months before the car is received. I believe RCT&HS policy is not to release info until the item is WELL IN HAND. "Murphy's Law" is in full effect here (if...

I think you're a bit confused about who owned whom....Western Maryland was majority controlled by B&O by a very high percentage. Reading was also controlled by B&O by a much smaller percentage. CNJ was a Reading subsidiary. I believe that the "Alphabet Route" was a way to get east-...

Otto: The WM and RDG were "Friendly Connections", and there was a lot of cooperation between the two. The power pooling or run throughs referred to between Hagerstown and Rutherford (Harrisburg) dated back to steam days. Western Maryland came up with the "speed lettering" first i...

They Sold Quite a Few!

The Reading sold off quite a few GP-7's. So much so, that the USRA, the people responsible for Conrail were concerned that so much was being sold off. 600-605, 610,611,617,619,661,664-666 were sold to ICG and rebuilt into Paducah geeps--who knows what pieces went where in that bunch 606,614 went to ...

Sorry, wrong flat

Sorry, I don't think that it's a Golden Gate car. It looks more like an FMn, which the ever-thrifty Reading made by cutting down a gondola. Take note of the ribs from the gon, that are not the usual (for a flat car) stake pockets.
