Saw this old thread and it prompts a question. I've never heard, butdoes anyone know if these Erie B's, when in rail welding service, still used their as delivered OP engines for "power" for the welding? Of course not for traction, pe se, as they were likely pulled by whatever power happen...

n Not to pick a nit, but I don't think they 628s were ever used on a regular basis out of Winona or to Huron. I think when first purchased (early 70s) they were used on manifest service to Minneapolis from Chicago/Milw, but then migrated to the ore lines as replacement for the H-16-66s (circa 1974-1...

Might be out-of-print, but Jerry Swazjakart (sp?) Had a "Chicago Railfan Guide" (or similar type title) back in the 1970s. It included a larger map which had plenty of detail on "pre-merger" lines, junctions, yards etc. An excellent reference. Only down side is that it didn't inl...

look like rail anchors, placed on rail snug against the ties. Spikes keep rail in place and inhibit side-to-side and roll-over movement. Anchors keep rails "set" so it doesn't move in the direction parallel with rail

Actually, the original charter was to build a tunnel system to install a phone system, not a freight tunnel system. When the City inspected it they did find a freight system. Typical of Chicago/Illinois, lots of politics and intrigue. I had the opportunity to visit the system in the late 1980s was e...

Just guessing, but it looks like it might be a "fold down" platform that a crew member walking the plank doesn't have to step down on the the ladder to walk around the unit

I thought I read some where (but could be wrong), that one stipulation of donated or sold military equipment was that it is was NOT to be repainted in military colors. Not sure of reasoning other than likely an obscure govrnmn't regulation. Anyone else?

I'd guess "Regular Service" is the key here, "Continuous service" also. Iowa Traction RR in Clear Lake, still rosters a fleet of ancient electric interurban locomotives, steeple cab style. oldest is #60 built by Baldwin-Westinghouse. still running in "revenue" service (...
