Re: The Flying Yankee

... today's kids don't seem to be quite as wild about restoring historic things as former generations . In fairness, today's kids are pretty busy trying not to get shot every time they go to school, and the ones that are out of school are working 2+ jobs to pay rent and student loans. I know or hav...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

I lived in Manhattan for 16 years. I didn't own a car. During that time I probably took hundreds of trips on local, regional and long distance trains. I don't think it ever even occurred to me to walk to Grand Central or Penn Station with my luggage to catch a train-- even though I could reach GCT ...

Yes, I specifically mentioned taxis and trolleys in my post and I pointed out that today we have taxis as well as Uber, Lyft, and free hotel shuttles. It's a 30 minute walk from Union Station Plaza to the Portland Harbor Hotel. It's a 45 minute walk from Portland Transportation Center to the Portlan...

4268, is the main focus right now, I've been told the loose tentative plan right now, is to have a big reveal during Railfan's weekend next year, with a freshly painted 4266 to match. This will be friggin' awesome — a matched pair of B&M F-units in fresh maroon & gold! We've all waited a long time ...

...walkways into Portland from the PTC could easily be constructed to get people through the maze of expressway interchanges... There are perfectly good sidewalks and signaled crosswalks from the station to wherever you need to go. I don't find it particularly maze-like; you just follow the sidewal...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

There are perfectly good sidewalks from the station to wherever you need to go. I don't find it particularly maze-like; you just follow the sidewalk and eventually you're downtown. There are wayfinding signs, too. How much hand-holding are we supposed to do for people? In the glory days of rail I do...

WATCO has plenty of options, depending on what their requirements are and how much they want to spend. Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

If it's a safety issue why do they only do it at POR and BON and not at any of the other 10 stations on the Downeaster route? Yes, most of those stations are unstaffed. But they've always been that way, and passengers have always been on the platforms and no one has ever gotten hurt or killed. This ...

Didn't Methuen lay off a large number of police officers last year or the year before? I've never gone to Methuen and thought to myself, "Gee, this town has too many police officers," but hey, what do I know? At any rate, they might not have enough officers at this point to do patrols of rail trails...

Re: Boston Surface Railroad: Worcester-Providence Commuter Rail

If the allegations in the lawsuit are true, it sounds like what we're dealing with here is a foamer who is trying to "play trains" at a bigger scale. I mean, come on... living in the station and not paying rent? Seriously?

It's easy to play games when you're playing with other people's money.
