DO-1 came to town last night/this morning with a 4-axle Dash 8 for the first time.
The station was demolished when the Maplewood Ave crossing was put in during urban renewal in the early 70s. The building that remained until the 90s was the freight house.
Track work at Sea-3 is progressing, but not expected to be completed until March/April timeframe. They are holding off on the spurs that will connect to the propane racks to make it easier to get trucks in there for construction. However, the bypass track that connects to Sprague and and the main be...
Plastic pellets for Tyco.
I visited Heber Valley Railroad today, the buyer of the 3 GP9s. I had a nice talk with the executive director, and he said they expect them to ship out next week.
I've been working on a display at the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum on the wreck of 3666 in 1939, based on the axle that was pulled from the river last May. Article in the Herald today: http://www.seacoastonline.com/news/20180504/historic-train-wreck-wheels-find-home-at-kittery-museum" on...
There was a reefer and several LPG tanks on the new main (#1). Looked like the reefer was a stretcher, and the power had been cut off. Probably about 3:00 when I went by. I didn't have time to investigate. Maybe they went up to Newington light?
I think the best view is from Kearsarge Way on the bridge. You can't see the dock, but you can watch them switching and shoving up the hill.
That's less than 1%. The steepest grade on the Portsmouth Branch is 1.14%, in Greenland. The track into Boise just over 2%, and they often struggle to shove 3 box cars up there.
One interesting bit of trivia on the new Sarah Long Bridge is that the grades are 2.0% on the Portsmouth side and 2.7% on the Kittery side. Spent nuclear fuel cars are 340 tons each. Should be a good show.
The track in all in place on the Sarah Long Bridge, and the first vehicle to cross by rail was a tamper. I was on hand to record the event. Ballasting and tamping should be complete within two weeks. No word yet on an actual move over the bridge. https://youtu.be/HUp_9q1RqjE" onclick="wind...
Nice! They were actually out here today, but couldn't do much. There's a lot of lumber in the yard waiting to go up to Boise.
Green Street will be out of service until at least Thursday morning. So sometime after that, most likely.
The switch for the new bridge is going in today/tomorrow. Also some work being done in the yard, but I didn't investigate what, exactly.
I dug up a couple of photos I took in November on the lift span before the miter joints were encased in concrete. You can see that there are strips of diamond plate on the inside of the gauge that are removable for maintenance.
