Takes time. I've tripped over rail, frogs and switch points that've been overgrown for years.

It depends on whether you'll be in the shops or as a maintenance of way mechanic that's assigned to a traveling track gang.

From time to time Roadmasters will have one of the Brandt trucks with a gon and they'll come on his territory and pick it up as scrap. It's in his material inventory as are tie plates, ties, frogs etc. and has to be accounted for as to weight and length and is charged out accordingly.

Do any old cross-ties still have date nails in them, r have they all been pulled by collectors? The date of the tie would give SOME evidence as to the epoch of the tie plate. They don't use Date Nails anymore. But i'll step out on a limb to say that it is possible to still find Date nails on abando...

Which signal came first; the Type SA or SC? They both furnish the same aspects but one uses a polarized armature and the other a pair of magnets to drive the mechanicism. What was the intendend application for the different types? There's a facebook page I'm a member of, Railroad Signals. You can j...

Also, after date nails were no longer used, it was possible to date a tie by a method that had a circle pressed down into the wood and 3 'dots' were spaced around the inside of the circle. You would take your watch and put it in the circles center and by looking at the numbers on the dial you could ...

To add to what gp80mac said, what I think will eventually happen is the roving conductor that will have certain limits or territory, the same way signal maintainers and section crews have, and when the train leaves that conductors limits it's then 'handed off' too another roving or traveling conduct...

You need to think more than twice about doing what you're thinking. With the advancements in technology and the future possibility of 1 man crews some of these guys that are already working will be lucky to stand for a job a few years from now. Some might think that's bulls*it but me and a lot of ot...

Haven't been back, haven't been to a union meeting, haven't worn a cap or jacket since I walked off the property in 07. I only miss SOME of the people I worked with, SOMETIMES. When I was there and returned from being off sick it would take a few days to transition back just with the changes that oc...
