You're describing the selector handle. The Century series manual I have explains: 1. Handle in "Off" position disconnects traction motors, power and braking circuits. 2. Handle in motoring position no. 1 sets up motoring circuits. Transition will take place automatically both accelerating ...

Talking with some guys today, I briefly heard something about them working on the traction motors these upcoming weeks. Most of the work has been on the 4449 and some passenger equipment.

Both Brooks-Scanlon S-3's exist but are stored.
A Simpson Timber S-3 also exists somewhere in California.
There's plenty if you look around.

I was up there in July, a C424 was on the ready track, an RS27 returned from switching, the AlcoCat was in the shop, and the M420 and another 424 were stored amongst nuerous GE's...so yes the Alcos are very much alive.

Alco advertised the model in question in the 1966 Car & Locomotive Cyclopedia as the "Century 643-H" Question answered. I talked to a former SP trainman, he mentioned the bleeding obvious as to why the Alcohaulics outlasted the K-M units but left so soon: maintenance. The DH643 had num...

The DH643 had a gross rating of 4300 hp, 3600 continuous (traction).
All were sold to Chrome and scrapped at Sacramento in fall 1973.

I was told Anthracite abandoned the unit following the death of it's former owner (ie. who's responsible for initially restoring it). Its been that way for 20 years now.

I'm surprised nobody bought up SP's experince aluminum pistions in their C-630s... that forever turned away a good customer.

Someone (FM/Alco) should consider building a M420TR like replacement FM and Alco have been out of locomotive production for decades... I think most potential customers would find a conventional M420 of more use, considering the prices were about the same(?) and parts were somewhat standardized. And...
