Freightguy is correct... Years ago they did. Today, you are just a warm body filling a vacancy. The word "Value" has no value on the railroad.

It's not easy to get hired with railroads, especially when you have no work experience. It takes perseverance, and most importantly railroads want a reflection of your work habits. And for a future reference, don't write letters to CEO's. They have far more important issues to deal with than getting ...

It's actually half of a month. Where I work, the pay cycles end on the 15th and the last day of the month... But, back to your original post... you will have to decide which one works better for you. The nice thing about freight, it that it doesn't talk! You don't deal with the general public. You a...

They used to send conductors to San Bernardino for the classroom portion of the training... I am not sure if that has changed. However, if they still do it that way, the RR will put you up in hotel at their expense. The OJT is done in Winslow. Best of luck to you. Winslow is a great place to work $$...

Thanks I decided to go with UP. Start class November 3, I'm looking forward to starting my new career. The downside with the UP is that they don't have the system-wide seniority. With BNSF, you can go wherever your seniority permits, except Pacific Northwest. This comes in very handy as a new hire ...

I am not sure how you came up with this conclusion, but I have been with BNSF for 17 years and have no complaints.

The entire training is 6 months. You are in Kansas for the first 3 weeks, and the final 2 weeks of your 6 month program for the final exams. However, if you don't pass, you are fired.

On the ATSF side, the yard agreement states: First penalty (20 min of pay) 5 hrs 40 min on duty. Second penalty on the 7th hour. 10 hrs on duty, the crew claims 56.0 yard miles. No lunch the entire shift, the engineer claims 100 mile - basic yard day. I cant tell you how many times I worked 12 hrs, ...

I imagine if I left my current seniority for a contractor I would be leaving it for good? I know you can take a leave of absence but...you know, I feel fishy doing that. There was an engineer a few years ago here where I work that took a leave of absence to try his luck running commuter trains. Whi...

I believe that BNSF requires the BMI to be no grater than 30 at the time of hiring.

Wow for that kind of guarantee I'd resign Amtrak as a hogger and get hired on as a trainmen to sit on the board for $5800 a half. I understand slchub... That's just the guarantee, and they are breaking it. The pay was one of the main reasons why I didn't cross over to Amtrak in 2007. At that time A...

You folks work for the wrong railroad... Where I work, the conductors extra board guarantee is $5600/half @ 100%. That's over 130K just to be available :)

Unfortunately, the 60 day probation is in the UTU's contract. There is nothing that union can do here, as they have agreed to this probationary period. You on the other hand, should have known better. They gave you the rule book and it's your responsibility to know it. If my conductor was to tell me...
