Re: What was the "Old Conhocton Roadway" (Batavia-Buffalo)?

It's extremely obvious on the LIDAR from Batavia west to the quarry but not visible in any way west of that. https://orthos.dhses.ny.gov/?Extent=-8716652.604095634,5309727.485031026,-8714753.621674333,5310638.757727536&Layers=2_meter_dem_index_nys&layerGroups=AdministrativeBoundaries,DEMIndexes,Orth...

Re: LV crosses the NYS Thruway?

For a short time it crossed just east of the Weedsport exit, the bridge remained much longer than it was used. Today you can spot it by small green advertising signs on the ROW on each side. Some of the fill is absent on the south side and just north of the CSX main it's totally removed. Niagara br...

Re: Hudson Suspension Bridge & New England Railway

I'm afraid I need someone to interpret the GIS image for me. I'm trying to fit it to the description made by choess. I can discern the general area that we're talking about, but I need the possible tunnel location superimposed over the image or a topo map --- either that, or a more thorough descrip...

Re: Burt Line (Beebe Line? Interurban near Canastota?)

It's still confusing as heck, but at least with LIDAR, it's very clearly confusing:

Re: Trolley in Java

Found a wealth of newspaper articles detailing this line, including corporation documents for the "Buffalo Valley Railroad" (NOT the B,A&A as detailed in the Abstracts of Title for several properties along that line!). I uploaded one of the clippings here (see below. or above. not exactly sure wher...

another rocket-scientist in a semi smacked the bridge on Onondaga Pkwy.
You'd think with all these rocket scientists we would have a base on the moon by now.

Re: Trains on CSX St. Lawrence Sub (CR's Montreal Secondary)

Tough poopie if the cars have to drive through a few inches of water. Better that than hitting the bridge.

In Australia there are some underheight tunnels. They have a height detector, and if it trips, a wall of water sprays down and a full-height STOP gets project onto it.

It probably doesn't work.

The fact that the line was abandoned, and washouts in places would have prevented a train from getting there, changed nothing. The rule was the rule, and he made sure it was followed! :P

Re: Unfinished Railroads of New York State

It's already helped me find more railbeds. Can you be specific, or is it too early for that, and you need to go out and do some field work? Yes, specifically, the Ogdensburg, Clayton & Rome cutting west of Glenfield was reused by the Glenfield & Western. However, I had it use too much of the OC&R. ...

Re: Unfinished Railroads of New York State

North of Telephone Road is definitely the RN&P. Different contractors were hired for different sections. If they were in a hurry, why not hire ALL the contractors who were available, and set them each to a section? I don't see anything north of https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/714578613 Not even wi...

Re: Unfinished Railroads of New York State

This is a LIDAR map of NY. Very handy for finding railroads whether finished or unfinished. It's already helped me find more railbeds. The resolution varies from 1 meter to 10 meters per measurement. The 1 meter is the only useful one. This location is some of the Rochester Nunda and Pennsylvania. h...

The project that you are about to embark on also cries out loud for a book besides a web-site. May I sugest a title: The iron roads that that did not made it. Call me old fashioned but I still prefere to browse or read in a book than do the same from the screen. Working on it, finally! This is for ...

Re: DL&W tunnel Oswego NY

yes thats the portal....the fill goes back about 50 to 75 yrds or less. it goes right under the freight hs In order to keep the radius of the curve as large as possible, the tunnel swings out to the south of the eastern end of the freight house. It's directly underneath the manhole cover. Then it s...
