Re: Amtrak NEC Inland, Springfield Shuttle/Regional/Greenfield Route

Good god... that is awful! For starters, the proper named stations should be integrated into the main timetable in the appropriate spot (above or below SPG, depending on direction) on pages 1-8, and then save the box on page 9 for advertising the new service. Or, just keep the box on page 9 and fix ...

Re: Amtrak NEC Inland, Springfield Shuttle/Regional/Greenfield Route

The Big E is the name of the fair, which is held on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition complex in West Springfield, MA. The Amherst Railway Society Big Hobby Show is held at the Eastern States Exposition. I always called it the "Big E Train Show". There is a city bus which runs every hour ...

Re: Conway Scenic Railroad (CSRX) discussion thread

Don't get me wrong, it was super-cool to be pulled by a steam engine up through the Notch and get all the extra mileage as well. I've ridden Conway Scenic's Railfan weekend extra to Whitefield in the past, and we have had photo runbys. I just thought it was a little curious that one wasn't provided ...

Re: Conway Scenic Railroad (CSRX) discussion thread

I was on board the extra to Whitefield on Sunday. For the most part, the experience, as usual, was enjoyable. However, for an extra during Railfan Weekend, the lack of a photo runby for those of us who paid, at minimum, $84, was interesting. There was even a car on the train with Mass Bay RRE guests...

I’ve heard that Amtrak occasionally uses the VRS turntable in St. Albans. Is this still the case?
IIRC, there's a wye in St Albans that the Vermonter uses. New England Central owns the yard, not VRS, and there is a turntable there.

Re: New stations built after Amtrak started

The New Hampshire stations are all near, in or next to their former Boston & Maine station sites. Likewise for Haverhill and Woburn as others noted. North Station never closed. Anderson/Woburn was built on a former superfund industrial site and was aimed to replace nearby Mishawum, which remains a ...

Re: New stations built after Amtrak started

New Haven (CT) State St Station, which was built first as a commuter stop on Shore Line East in 2002 and later expanded to include Hartford Line service, commencing June 2018. Amtrak service added to the station at that time. Sure, its a mile or so up the road from New Haven-Union (NHV) but State St...

Re: Amtrak NEC Inland, Springfield Shuttle/Regional/Greenfield Route

Yes, I got you now about the I-91 part. From Springfield to New Haven, it takes just over an hour in little traffic. Ctrail trains, counting padding in the schedule, take an hour and thirty two minutes from Springfield to New Haven while many of the Amtrak trains that accept Ctrail tickets are ten ...

Re: PAR Business Train (ST 100, 101, 102 & 41; PAR 1 & 2)

"Advocates for the Seacoast Greenway told Seacoast Online that the former rail-trail could be used to access downtowns like in Portsmouth and Hampton, as well as Seabrook’s shopping centers on Route 1 ." Yeah, that's a good one! Too bad the line couldn't have been kept for future rail service. At o...

Re: Union Station Retail Redo Planned In New Haven

I have had to wait for connecting trains for an hour or so at NHV before, and can attest that a place to get a beer there would be great. Some sort of establishment on the upper level would be perfect, overlooking the waiting room. Until the outlying rail lines (Hartford Line, SLE) get better freque...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

Yup, several photos including shots in Wiscasset and Bath. Line looks to be very scenic. I meant to ride it back when Maine Eastern operated excursion service over it. Hopefully I'll be able to ride Amtrak over it at some point in the not-to-distant future. Could this be a first... a line that was o...

Yes, a good sign indeed. I'd love a chance to ride this line. I missed out when Maine Eastern was running their excursions.

Re: Conway Scenic Railroad (CSRX) discussion thread

#97 went down on 12/29/2010 and came back into service October 2018. By the winter of 2011, #40 and #3025 were both operational. At the time, there wasn't an immediate need for a third steam locomotive, so #97 sat for a few years on display. IIRC, its restoration didn't really begin in earnest until...

My o/s (Windows10) wants me to pay 99cents for a codec to view. Suggest posting on YOUTUBE in the future.

(Mods may want to put this in the Vermonter thread if they so desire, as I'm assuming its of 54/57 arriving into WRJ)

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

If the reroute via the StL&A/Grand Trunk, It would make the new Royal Jct siding pretty pointless... at least for passenger rail (Pan-Am gets another "parking space" for their freights). But, IIRC, there is very limited freight service at present on the line from Yarmouth Jct south to East Deering, ...
