Re: Silver Line Dulles WMATA Metrorail progress/pictures

JDC Metro's board just heard a presentation about 8 issues that are almost certainly pushing back the opening of the line past July 2020. The report details 8 issues that must be addressed before Metro will accept the project. https://wamu.org/story/19/09/12/here-are-the-8-silver-line-problems-that...

Re: WMATA Summer 2019 BL/YL Virginia platform project

danib62 Maybe Weese should have had more foresight and included conduits in his plan for future use in order to make them upgradable. They did, but not in the places WMATA has tacked the additional conduits. Spare were install for all that fiber for cellular and WMATA's network traffic and to accom...

Re: WMATA Summer 2019 BL/YL Virginia platform project

Those LED luminaries will not duplicate the charm of the original incandescent bulbs. I hope I am not the only one that finds the that surface mounted galvanized conduits to be hideously ugly. It is truly disgusting to me how WMATA has continued to bastardized the original Harry Weese architectural ...

Re: WMATA Summer 2019 BL/YL Virginia platform project

JDC Metro's ongoing history photos series is continuing, this time with Van Dorn station. https://www.wmata.com/service/rail/PlatformProject/Van-Dorn-Archive-Photo-Gallery.cfm?id=1051 None of those pictures are of the station, all but one are pictures of the post tension segment used on the bridges...

Re: Expanded DC/Baltimore Commuter Rail Proposals

JackRussell Heavy is a relative concept, I guess. I have seen days when it was literally faster to drive to NYC than it was to drive to the beach. There was one day that we spent an hour stuck in a near gridlock just to get to Annapolis - we got off, had dinner, and turned around. It is those 5+ ho...

Re: WMATA Summer 2019 BL/YL Virginia platform project

"JDC" A fun read on the misuse of fonts by a contractor replacing the platform signs at Van Dorn as part of the PIP this summer. https://wamu.org/story/19/08/09/the-wrong-font-appeared-on-a-metro-sign-and-people-on-twitter-got-upset/ What surprises me is how they managed to get from the fabrication...

Re: Silver Line Dulles WMATA Metrorail progress/pictures

JDC Metro is pumping the breaks on the opening date floated by WMAA. https://wtop.com/tracking-metro-24-7/2019/08/concerns-remain-at-metro-a-year-from-possible-silver-line-opening/ More like WTOP giving WMATA, or more specifically Paul Wiedefeld a rebuttal to what WMAA was announcing. If memory ser...

Re: Expanded DC/Baltimore Commuter Rail Proposals

"RailVet" "Preston - Hurlock MDOT is inactive with most of the rail removed." I know a fellow in that local area who has been trying to get a tourist train started on that line for many years without much apparent success. I haven't been out there for a while but the track was still intact when I l...

Re: Expanded DC/Baltimore Commuter Rail Proposals

"STrRedWolf" Lets expand on that further, from looking at the MDOT railmap and Google Maps: http://www.mdot.maryland.gov/newMDOT/Freight/Documents/railmap.pdf As one that lives over here on the Eastern Shore I can tell you that the status of some of the rail line is somewhat inaccurate. Clayton - E...

Re: Silver Line Dulles WMATA Metrorail progress/pictures

@ JackRussell I entered the Greensboro Station when the faregates were opened to let passengers into the paid area of the station before noon. A couple of trains stopped in both directions without opening the doors. I boarded the first eastbound train out of Wiehle and got off at East Falls Church a...

Re: Silver Line Dulles WMATA Metrorail progress/pictures

"JackRussell" That's not how they opened phase 1. There was a train parked at Spring Hill that we boarded - it was nearly empty and we were able to board. We had to wait 10-15 minutes before it left - in advance of the "first train". If it was westbound then that explains why the train west out of ...

Re: Silver Line Dulles WMATA Metrorail progress/pictures

justalurker66 I see no reason for this pattern not to be used for Phase II. I expect trains will be running their full "after opening" pattern long before the first official train, with passengers forced off at Wiehle-Reston. People will not be able to board trains inbound trains west of Wiehl-Rest...

Re: Silver Line Dulles WMATA Metrorail progress/pictures

Tentative opening date announced. "The Silver Line to Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County, Virginia, will open on or about July 16, 2020, at least if everything goes according to plan from here on out, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said." First potential opening date se...

Re: WMATA Summer 2019 BL/YL Virginia platform project

"JDC" Someone asked Metro about this on Twitter, and Metro said these tiles were being installed (in lieu of the other new prefab tiles recently used at outdoor stations) to "preserve the original design". They still improve traction, though. Metro also said more details about these new tiles were ...
