Re: Conway Scenic Railroad (CSRX) discussion thread

Not only will the rail not be restored through Coleman's pit, they will fight even harder to keep the rail trail away, the risk of injury or death to a pedestrian/bicyclist going through there would be considerably high. Now that VTR is about to buy the NHCR, don't expect them to retain the section ...

You want the facts here it is:
1. BS&G is against it
2. State legislators are against it
3. FORT is against it with political support and backing of local businesses including NHN.
4. Coleman's is against it
5. Conway Scenic is not interested for the four reasons noted above.

There will never be an extension north of Ossipee Aggregates, so long as NHN is owned by BS&G. Not to mention they are one of the many local businesses backing support for the Ossipee Rail Trail. The abandoned portion of the Conway Branch, is going to become a rail trail.

I thought the NEGS purchase was strange but this one, this one is even more strange. At least with NEGS, there's still the potential for the aggregate businesses but NHCR!? Could they be gearing up for for a system expansion between St. Johnsbury and Groveton? There's no business anywhere between th...

You raise a valid point about CSX, but it still doesn't excuse the fact that NHN wants no business expanding to the north and have doubled down on that by supporting the rail trail. As for the potential shippers in Tamworth go, I don't see that going anywhere, not unless they can get NHN to have a c...

This is what happens when an abandoned rail line sits around and nobody does anything to save it. The state has owned it for 23 years, they performed a feasibility study immediately upon purchase, they've issued 2 RFP going back to 2015(?) and not one response to those RFP's. Now all of a sudden the...

Have the washouts on the Conway Branch been repaired yet? It might explain the reason for the delayed start for Conway bound trains.

Jonathan, you will never see the Conway Scenic get into the freight business, if any freight appears on the Conway Branch, it will be handled by NHN. It does sound like ownership was willing to create another short line freight railroad specifically for the mountain division in Maine to help off set...

If the Conway Scenic was serious about the Mt. Division, then I have no doubt they have the means to restore the Conway Branch, just the lower miles alone drops the restoration price but that's assuming they intend to use the same rail. We still don't know if they are looking at all or part of the C...

The Conway Scenic has expressed interest in the branch south of Conway, hopefully the state doesn't shut the door on their face like MEDOT did last year for the Mt. Division. That was entirely Conway Scenic's fault. The state held multiple rail trail committee meetings and no one from the railroad ...

As for freight, both lines have been closed for 40+ years. As others have noted the millions it would cost to bump speeds up to 10 MPH wouldn't be worth the less than 100 cars a year they might pull collectively from either line. Additionally when you start moving freight, that is a whole different...

Their goal is to connect it with the existing Presidential Trail, bypassing Whitefield entirely kind of defeats that purpose... plus there's nowhere in between to park beyond the Pondicherry lot by the airport. All road crossings mentioned are on 30 mph roads, and on a RoW the DoT already owns and ...

Reopen Waumbek Junction to Quebec Junction as an active rail corridor, they would loose parking at Airport Rd but you could build a new bigger lot at Hazen's, that would give them the entire B&M line Woodsville to Berlin. That's what I remember reading anyways, I forget where I saw that. If that...

I doubt it, their PDF suggests that parking/trailhead will be at the diamond. https://media-gallery.unh.edu/media_submission/1179/?added__year=2023 I wonder if they are even aware there is that alternate route, seems foolish to have pedestrians cross major roads seven times in the distance of three...

I wonder if they could be eyeing the old Groveton Branch, between Scott's Junction and Whitefield Junction. Most of the ROW is still intact, the only deviation would be the Hillside Gravel Pit and the Water Treatment Plant. Going that route would avoid all the major highway crossings.
